Not sure I agree there. The Beatles not only made quality music and were accomplished musicians in their own right, but also innovative artists. Yes, there are plenty of "simple pop and reinterpreted rhythm and blues" songs in their repertoires, but they were fresh for the times and aren't the ones that endured through the decades.

As for Gangnam Style well agree to disagree there...
What bothers me is that you put yourself in this position of authority where you decide what's quality music and what's not. Accomplished musicians, OK, but Lemmy Kilmister says in his book that there were a lot of bands who could perform on that level. It also sounds to me like you're having double standards when it comes to originality. You say that the simple pop songs are not the one that endured through decades but in a lot of cases they are. She Loves You, Yellow Submarine, Let It Be, Hey Jude...these chord progressions came with the original version of Gutenberg's bible and they were not fresh even then. Their sound was fresh but it's not the sound they invented.

We are also not talking about the fact that the Beatles had a huge media push before coming to the states (https://gobraithwaite.com/thinking/...imed-the-u-s-for-the-beatles-and-beatlemania/) and that their manager played a pivotal role in the band and was sometimes called the fifth Beatle. Their image was a big part of their success. They are the prototype of a modern superstar that you're disliking so hard. Although probably this title goes to Franz Liszt.

I want to say also that simplicity doesn't necessarily means bad quality. Music of romantic composers is/was considered dumbed down in comparison with complex polyphonic baroque music. Which doesn't make Mozart and Beethoven low quality, it just makes them...different.

Ah I see, that's where we disagree, popular artists should have some degree of talent, innovation and bring more to the table than a trained voice, in my book. A good backing band and producer is not enough for me to be interested and think the music is good, I need the artist to bring something to the table musically/creatively and want to hear original songs they write that catch my attention.
You're just implying that these people don't have writing talent but the reality is that the major labels force artists to record music written by writers with more recognition because it improves their chance of having a hit even if the artist shows promise when it comes to writing.

This is an internet forum full of strangers. None of us have any authority on anything, nor am I putting myself in that position. I'm just better at expressing my opinions bluntly and clearly without all the PC "don't hurt peoples feelings" mentality some posters have. I'm talking about my passion, music, an art form, and my opinion is my own and as valid or invalid (and subjective) as anyone else's. As such I will bring it forward without questioning whether it may hurt sensibilities, because I enter the conversation open mindedly enough to not take other people's opinions to heart and expect the same from them. That is the value in open discussion forums such as this one, and there is very little value in arguing the contrary, or how anyone else's opinion sounds like it comes from a "position of authority" because well... That means exactly jack $#!7 whenever art is concerned in my book. Being blunt has the benefit of getting blunt responses which hopefully are more about the topic at hand than the perceived offenses, and as such ends up giving me people's honest opinions on topics without the fluff. Because ultimately that is what interests me.

If I wanted to have a nice polite conversation I'd go have tea with my grandma.

Now that we got that out of the way, chord progressions do not define a "simple" pop song to me, nor whether those endure or not. We can certainly agree to disagree on our point of view of music, and how to classify songs and genres, that's OK by me. The Beatles needed 0 media push before getting to the states, they were already popular.

I'm not implying anything, and certainly some have writing talent, but a great deal more dont. Again that is only me sharing what I think, and replying to those who want to respond to those opinions. Why anyone bothers doing so if my opinion offends them is beyond me - surely there are better ways to spend your time if that is how you feel and are going to interpret strangers' opinions online.

IMO, FWIW, YMMV.

17 pages in just over five and a half hours. What, the "tone" and "tonewoods" threads from yesterday get boring?

Bravo.

Right

Why? Why is using one device to produce a series of sound waves different than using a different device to do the same thing? Is holding a string against a fret while plucking it harder than using software to construct music?
Because music is made with musical instruments played by musicians, not a computer wiz using algorithms on a laptop or Iphone IMHO.

The point of the thread is actually the absence of a point we could all convey towards to.
The first guitar player I remember was Eddie Van Halen; my first bassist was Jaco Pastorius… unrepeatable, to me.
But my dad's, Chuck Berry, Paul McCartney… unrepeatable… to him.

When these guys were kicking the bar to new heights, many dismissed them as some probably dismiss what is coming today; we got our minds blown already… it is how humans are programmed and we proceed like this most probably because our average lives span over 2 or 3 generations.

Then, once a century comes up a Verdi, a Bach, a Miles Davies that bring all of us together. I think we could all agree we are getting ready for the next coming….

Why does everyone forget about us Gen X'rs...its bad enough that our parents forgot about us.
Your parents didn't forget about you any more than any other generation ya whiny little punk.

Never mind that you're like crossfit people and vegans. You constantly remind us that you're there. ;)

I had some wonderful dolmades today. Who says dolmathes and who says dolmades? I'll confess I don't know which is correct.
Anyway these were firm and flavorful. The place around the corner makes them a little too mushy, not my favorite.

Anybody here make their own? I'd like to try.

Derail time?
Isn't one Greek and one is Turkish?

:)

The derail has commenced!
