This is an internet forum full of strangers. None of us have any authority on anything, nor am I putting myself in that position. I'm just better at expressing my opinions bluntly and clearly without all the PC "don't hurt peoples feelings" mentality some posters have. I'm talking about my passion, music, an art form, and my opinion is my own and as valid or invalid (and subjective) as anyone else's. As such I will bring it forward without questioning whether it may hurt sensibilities, because I enter the conversation open mindedly enough to not take other people's opinions to heart and expect the same from them. That is the value in open discussion forums such as this one, and there is very little value in arguing the contrary, or how anyone else's opinion sounds like it comes from a "position of authority" because well... That means exactly jack $#!7 whenever art is concerned in my book. Being blunt has the benefit of getting blunt responses which hopefully are more about the topic at hand than the perceived offenses, and as such ends up giving me people's honest opinions on topics without the fluff. Because ultimately that is what interests me.

If I wanted to have a nice polite conversation I'd go have tea with my grandma.

Now that we got that out of the way, chord progressions do not define a "simple" pop song to me, nor whether those endure or not. We can certainly agree to disagree on our point of view of music, and how to classify songs and genres, that's OK by me. The Beatles needed 0 media push before getting to the states, they were already popular.

I'm not implying anything, and certainly some have writing talent, but a great deal more dont. Again that is only me sharing what I think, and replying to those who want to respond to those opinions. Why anyone bothers doing so if my opinion offends them is beyond me - surely there are better ways to spend your time if that is how you feel and are going to interpret strangers' opinions online.

IMO, FWIW, YMMV.

Just from my point of view, and perhaps to help you better communicate with others: I don't think you're seeing your own words the way other people may be reading them. You say that you may be putting off people because you are being blunt and non-pc with your opinions, but I don't think that is it. I think it's because you're not stating them as opinions. You are not prefacing your ideas with "I think" or "In my opinion" or something similar. You are writing it as if it is a fact.

Your parents didn't forget about you any more than any other generation ya whiny little punk.

Never mind that you're like crossfit people and vegans. You constantly remind us that you're there. ;)

Waitaminute...aren't you Gen X, Dos Dedos? Gen X is born 1965-1980. I thought you were in that range.

I didn't realize that had to be spelled out for every post in a back and forth conversation about whether new music sucks and why... Or tort is best or not... I will from now on mind you, point taken.

That goes for all of us, all the time. You can type what you mean, but you can't make other people interpret it exactly like you meant it. Doesn't matter how many "IMO" you preface your words with.

that's because not everyone reads the whole post(s) and blurts out a response to what they assume it is saying
Or reads the article quoted in the OP that lists several reasons new music is shrinking while discounting the idea that new music sucks.

I particularly think it's odd no one has commented on why the Grammy's viewership has declined. I don't think comparing that award ceremony to the NBA finals is correct. The better comparison is to the Espys. But I don't know why anyone would want to watch one millionaire hand out an award to another millionaire voted on by other millionaires. Anything good that happens gets released as clips later. To each their own.

Bandcamp was suggested and I will check it out - thank you
Any other sites that you found are good for new music (no radio pop please)

College radio used to be good in my area. We had two with a strong enough signal. The good one was bought by NPR which talks more than plays music. The remaining college station rarely plays new music.
YouTube can maybe be good, if I clear my history after viewing a classic band, and I know what to look for.
SiriusXM - has some new stuff, but you need to search for it, and then they move it somewhere else.
Spotify - the commercials are obnoxious and loud and way to frequent. I can tolerate a few commercials, I grew up on radio, so I am used to commercials. I'm not convinced their platform is worth paying for.

Paying for the platform removes the commercials. It's not a lifetime commitment. I use YouTube music. There are various ways to hear new music on there.

You should have highlighted the Bob Marley, the Queen, and the Pink Floyd albums as well. So, 5 of top 11 in 2010-2019 were released before 1980.

Actually six, because the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, at least Volume 1, is all pre-1980 songs. So is Volume 2 but it missed the top 10 :headphone:

And people bought this on vinyl for $30??? :bored:

so where does one with limited time find new music?

This Week's New Album Releases - comprehensive list of new releases
Apple Music - New Releases, My New Music Mix, Suggested Artists
YouTube Channels - Tiny Desk, KEXP, AudioTree, Paste Magazine
Facebook - Guitar magazine, MusicRadar, WBGO, Jazz FM91, local music scene pages and venues

As an example, back in October 2021, I saw the album cover for Trip The Witch on albumoftheyear. Didn't pay attention to it. Then it came up under New Releases on Apple Music. I still didn't pay attention to it. Last week, I saw an article from Guitar magazine on Facebook talking about a new Dean DeLeo album, Trip The Witch. Turns out, it's him and Tom Bukovac, a Nashville session guitarist who started his own YouTube channel at the beginning of the pandemic. Dean watched his YouTube videos enough to want to record with him. The album is great, so I started watching his channel, which is just him grousing over guitar cliches. That's how you new music in 2022.

Don't forget to ask your friends what new music they listen to.

No, it's not about fairness just about quality of music being put out. I'm still on topic per the article in the OP.

My point is that old music is rising in popularity today because today's music is not quality. It's a vast overgeneralization that mostly applies to what's popular by today's standards, but still very much a fact based on streaming numbers.

Where are these "streaming numbers". I'm not doubting you (yet). But that's a broad-stroke term with none of the "numbers" to hack it up.

Here's the top 200 Spotify streamed songs. Ain't nutn throwback here.

We have a couple of stations here that play not necessarily new music but different music thought out the day. That can be good too. Music you haven't heard is new music to you, regardless of when it was manufactured. And the advent of radio stations streaming over the interwebs means you don't have to be limited to your local radio scene.

OMG, the volume of new music is intimidating.
So many genres that I have never heard of.
There has got to be some good stuff burried in here somewhere.
I may have to allocate some of my TalkBass time to new music research.

Regarding albumoftheyear, which is indeed intimidating, you could just start with scrolling through and looking at the artists you know who have new records. That's really how I use it. Sometimes I see an album cover I like and go find it on YouTube or Apple Music. Most times it's terrible but sometimes it works out for me. :D
