Man, I was spot on with that post.
I realize this, was just explaining the seeming incompatibility of concept and reality. Human definitions don't fit material relationships perfectly, this being a fine example.

I would use the concept of nonexistence as opposed to framing it as being dead prior to birth. Death/dead has the connotation of having had prior life. Is the question specifically for the existence of an immaterial soul prior to conception or birth?

I read quite a bit about Buddhism a few years back. There was rebirth but no reincarnation. The Self does not exist after death. The metaphor used to illustrate was bubbles on a river. Bubbles arise from the river and when a bubble pops another replaces it. It is from the same river but it isn't the same bubble that existed prior. That bubble will never exist again.
My takeaway, whatever it is that makes and animates me will always exist somewhere but "I" am unique and will never exist again.

You mean, conscious thought? What about organisms that are considered "non-intelligent"? They're alive but we don't know if they're intelligent (amoeba, paramecium, etc). If something can respond to stimulus (the definition of 'irritable') and can reproduce, it's alive, AFAIK.
There is no female hormone to trigger a female infant, but after 6 weeks testosterone is released to form a male infant.

Personally, I never felt it a fair trade off (the hairy nip nips vs. luscious melons) so I went and grew my own pair of melons (WITH hairy nips, take that, ladies!)
Sure, materially speaking, we existed before "ourselves" as individuals but I think that is exactly what "prior existence" refers to; the existence of our identity as entities in the universe. To simplify, if you were to build a Lego fort, the pieces to build it existed long before the fort itself but that doesn't mean the fort existed. Once built, it becomes it's own body, independent of all other material. We are the Lego fort.
