What bass gods do you idolize?

Well there are a lot of great players in the world and I know
I've only heard a small number of them. The player that I have the most respect for though is Jeff Berlin.
I've played bass for more than twenty years and I still don't
have the talent that Jeff Berlin had twenty years ago!!
During a Peavey clinic he did years ago, there was a "funk/slap player" in the audience
who was like yeh, but can you funk/slap? So Mr. Berlin asked
the guy to come up and show him what he meant. As the guy was going up to show the people how to slap a bass,
Jeff started goin' off on a mean funk line. The guy turned around halfway and went back to his seat!!!!:bassist:

I don't idolize anyone, but Stuart Zender was probably my biggest influence a few years back and has had the biggest impact on my playing. Since then it's mostly been people like Pino Palladino, Chuck Rainey and Randy Hope Taylor that do it for me most. There's Jamerson as well, you can't miss him though.

phil lesh inspired me to buy my first bass on 8-15-91 at the haight ashbury music center. i scored an aria pro 2 bass a soft fender gigbag and a set of amplified headphones for 165 bucks. for the next 3 days i walked around the parking lot at shoreline ampitheatre playing my new instrument and occasionally had to let people put them on to hear what i was playing. the funny thing is that most everyone said "that sucks" my response of course "i've only been playing for a couple of days man" damn hippies. but i sure do miss those days.....ahhhhhh the memories

Don't you guys admire yourself? I remember practicing for so long that I wouldn't get up to turn the lights on when it got dark. I was obsessed and I'm glad I was and proud of it.

One of my heroes is me and I hope you guys can say the same about yourselves and not be the least bit ashamed of it.

i agree using "idolize" is such a strong word.. anyway the guys which inspired my bass playing
