What beer are you drinking (or rating) II: second bottle

I have a question for the wise.

I like a few 750ml corked Belgian beers, mostly saisons and tripels. I seem to have a good amount of foam explosion when I open them. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I don't mind that there's foam, but I'm wasting precious beer here.

That being said, I had some marvelous Tripel Karmeleit yesterday and it hit the spot.

How cold are they? (Warmth drives the CO2 out of solution)

(1) Abbot Ale (U.K)
(2) Old Speckled Hen (U.K)
(3) Yona Yona (Real Ale from Japan)
(4) Hobgoblin (Wychwood Brewery U.K.)

I had a bottle of steamwhistle at a bar last night, it was okay, but a little skunked. I also recently had a bottle of Rogue's dead guy ale. To be honest, I didn't really like it, I mostly just got booziness with a hint of citrus to it, perhaps I was expecting a bit of a bigger malt body or something.

Either way, I've got a couple bottles of Chimay, premiere (red label) and another with a gold/yellow label, and the bottles state that they should be had out of broad-mouthed stemmed glasses, but I only have a couple of pint glasses. Would I be okay with drinking them out of that, or is that a beer crime of the worst kind?

Mmmm... Hobgoblin!

I just spent a couple of weeks on vacation in Florida and tried a bunch of beers. I'm a bit of a hophead and can't get much in the line of hoppy beer up here so I had a bit of a hopfest.

I tried the following:

Cigar City Jai Alai IPA
Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA
Lagunitas Maximus IPA
Stone Ruination IPA
Victory Hop Devil IPA
Bell's Two Hearted Ale
Stone Arrogant Bastard

Out of the IPAs, I liked Jai Alai and Hop Devil best. Both divine beers with lots of hop character but some other flavours evident. I finally found my hops tipping point though. I enjoyed the Maximus IPA but wouldn't want to drink too many in one sitting. However, Ruination was just too much for me. The hops totally decimated everything else. First Stone beer I've tried that I didn't care for much. Torpedo wasn't very flavorful which was disappointing because SN Pale Ale is so good. I found Two Hearted Ale to be nice and crisp but not particularly flavorful.

And Arrogant Bastard... Well, this is precisely what an ale should be. Big big complex flavour, excellent balance between malt and hops. Benchmark US Ale for me. Excellent, excellent beer.

Spent a few days in Ottawa and had:

Muskoka Mad Tom IPA
Great Lakes Devil's Pale Ale
Tree Brewing Hophead

All pretty tasty. Mad Tom is on the mild side of the IPA spectrum but has a nice flavour. DPA is awesome. Not really a pale ale per se (it's pretty dark) but big hoppy flavour! Hophead is a classic west coast IPA (brewed in Kelowna, BC). Nice and hoppy yet clean.

I've had both mad tom and devil's pale, I loved both of them! I'll try looking for anything from tree brewing in the future.

If you like Stone's Arrogant Bastard(and who doesn't?!), you should try their Sublimey Self-Righteous Ale. It's got a real punchy hoppiness to it, but a smooth, less bitter aftertaste like a black ale. Great stuff.

Hop Devil is one of my favorites too, though I'm a bit biased as Victory is my hometown brewery :). Victory, Stone, and Dogfish Head just released a collaboration last month actually that was quite good. Oh and if you ever find yourself in San Diego/Orange County, be sure to check out Port Brewing, they have some amazing seasonals.

I had this in my fridge for a while, opened it today. What a fantástic beer. Tastes a bit like a Pauwel Kwak, but a bit sweeter. Absolutely superb.

Yeah, so does eating...

So, I'm a little late in the game, I just read through all 40+ pages of this thread and was shocked that nobody mentioned:

Oscar Blues, Mama's Little Yella Pils!

It's pretty tasty!

Um, I wouldn't wanna argue about food but... wrong. Eating doesn't make people fat, eating crap does (or too much of some good stuff, namely whole grain carbs, fruits and healthy fats).

And beer, let's face it, is totally expendable in a healthy diet. Not that it is not awesome to have a bottle/ glass of cold, dark draught now and then, particularly on a hot day. Just like chocolate :D

Nice! If you've had the Chimay premiere, let me know how it is, I've got a bomber of it downstairs, and I'm just waiting for the right occaision to pop it open. It'll probably be with my girlfriend, whom I am slowly turning onto good beer :)

Meh, in moderation beer can be good for you. Some doctors say that blah blah blah, a bunch of stuff. Yeah, it has the capacity to make you fat, but so do grains, potatoes, and just about any kind of oil or fat - I just look at it as part of the "filler" of a meal, it adds some fibres and carbohydrates, and if it's bottle conditioned with some of that yeast in it it has some vitamins in it. Can it be excluded from a healthy diet? Definitely. Do I respect your choice? Definitely. But if I enjoy a good beer, I don't see why it can't be included as part of a healthy diet too.
