What did you learn today?

I learned that we have spotted material, a star or gas or something, that appears to be approaching the black hole at the center of the Milky Way. We should be able to observe what happens as it approaches the event horizon which is pretty crazy.
This is cool when I'm reading it, but scary when I imagine your avatar reading it!

Wouldn't that be a blast :woot:
Hopefully not a literal blast!;)

Captain Howdy likes astrophysics too!

It shouldn't blow up anything near us. I guess there are billions of stars between us and the center. The deal is that if we can see the material get swallowed up, that should allow us to sort of "see" it as it will emit x-rays and possibly fling some of the material which could indirectly give us a more precise location of it.

Good news^this. Love a good light show

However, I just loin'd that Some Of Your Suntan Comes From Beyond The Milky Way - so, maybe, we could all be just that little bit more bronzed and beautiful, after the event.

I learned the Truth behind an old, Old Teacher chestnut..I witnessed it acted out in front of me...
"No one ever learned ANYTHING while they were scared".

There's a story. Were you scared? Were they scared? You didn't let them tie you up, did you? Should we send help?

- The planet Jupiter does not, strictly speaking, orbit the sun.

Truly? You're not going to make me google this myself, are you?

Today I learned what that really odd plant growing on the back edge of my place is called. It's actually quite a large bramble, about the size of a couple pickups, and blackberries have nothing on this thing. I've been encouraging it to grow along the property line and hope to have a natural barrier in a few years. I never cared what it was called, but wifey is one of those who can't stand not knowing things so she looked it up today. The Flying Dragon plant. It's actually some sort of mini citrus plant from Asia and how it wound up on a hillside in north Alabama is a mystery, but there it is. All the water this year has it going wild. It's in full swing right now and the leaves hide all the interesting bits so I found a picture on line that shows why I like having it on the back of my place.

I was witness to a teacher, as she BITCHED out a 10 year old in front of his peers, over whether or not he should be allowed to go to the bathroom...a sweet, shy l'il ESOL kid who had absolutely NO idea why this woman was so loud and upset!
He'd asked to go to the men's room, and I'd told him to go. He was walking toward the classroom door when the woman lost her ship, and didn't seem to be able to reel herself back in until I interrupted and told her "It's ok, I told him he could go."..then, she tried to calmly shift gears and get back to the subject...the 10ths column vs the 100ths column...and realized that she had scared the ship out of the entire class...that there would be no more learning going on in That room until she cleaned up the mess she'd made...maybe some time after Thanksgiving...
The look on her face...her entire countenance... broadcast that she was gobsmacked...and all I could think was: 'If I ever hear the softest whisper of a suggestion that Anyone is contemplating a discussion that could, under ANY circumstances, lead toward the consideration of my grand daughter landing in THAT "teacher's" class I'd be up in that Principal's office before sundown prepared to burn the f¥€#%ng place to the f¥€#%ng ground'.
Yeah... I was that upset.
Upset enough to try and cost that woman her job?
I don't know...

I've been doing some heavy lifting today - thinking… thinking… - this time, about certain myths surrounding men and women lifting weights - Women just as good at lifting weights as men, strength coach says :)

This is certain. Weight-bearing exercise is good and everyone becomes stronger and healthier, as a consequence.

Stronger muscles improve the body's ability to work, heal and prevent injury.

"Strength training is improving the body's capacity to produce force; that's as simple as it gets" […]
