What did you learn today?

Life is like a monstrous iced cake and we are the nuts sprinkled on top.

When you screw up it's like you stuck your finger in the icing and made a big hole.

If you are walking from one room to another with the cake on a tray and it slips off and falls on the floor, that is sort of what a cosmic disaster that ends civilization is like.

I also had an assistant who used tabs to align margins. Don't edit the document or it doesn't work. Also thought that the virus on her computer wasn't a problem. Kept infecting everyone else's computer.
Our guitarist emails a setlist out before each gig.

He puts a new page in by pressing return repeatedly. Our drummer doesn't have a problem with it because they both use the same version of Office (or whatever MS supplies these days). I use LibreOffice, page 1 is ok but after that the pages never start where they should so I remove all the blank lines and put new page commands in.

I have mentioned to him a couple of times that there is a better way to do it but he just says the drummer hasn't a problem and then glazes over if I try to explain that Cntl+Return is easier for him and me.

I suppose I shouldn't expect too much from a welder!

Just got all the goss… They're mad for this story, apparently. Fascinating :)

[Textile archaeologist Annika Larsson] […] realised she was not looking at Viking patterns at all but ancient Arabic Kufic script.

[…]

"I couldn't quite make sense of them and then I remembered where I had seen similar designs - in Spain, on Moorish textiles."

[…]

There were two words that kept recurring. One of them she identified with the help of an Iranian colleague.

It was the name "Ali" - the fourth caliph of Islam.

But the word next to Ali was more difficult to decipher. […]

I learned today that playing bass clarinet again after 40 years is a bit like "riding a bike". :) At least, not nearly as bad as I expected. (Last time I tried, I made very bad sounds.)

Today I learned that David Ellefson is not a fan of Sansamp.

I learned not to do this when picking up my neice at the airport. (She was not in rehab.)View attachment 2783355

This is splendid. I can think of many variations:

Welcome home! Thanks for your work with ebola victims!

Congrats on your parole!

etc etc etc

You are the best uncle. But I might be glad you're not mine.

Got a little serve of The Yellow Kid and the school of yellow kid journalism, on this day.
The Yellow Kid was the name of a lead American comic strip character that ran from 1895 to 1898 in Joseph Pulitzer's New York World, and later William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal. Created and drawn by Richard F. Outcault in the comic strip Hogan's Alley (and later under other names as well), it was one of the first Sunday supplement comic strips in an American newspaper, although its graphical layout had already been thoroughly established in political and other, purely-for-entertainment cartoons. Outcault's use of word balloons in the Yellow Kid influenced the basic appearance and use of balloons in subsequent newspaper comic strips and comic books.

Although a cartoon, Outcault's work aimed its humor and social commentary at Pulitzer's adult readership. The strip has been described as "... a turn-of-the-century theater of the city, in which class and racial tensions of the new urban, consumerist environment were acted out by a mischievous group of New York City kids from the wrong side of the tracks."

The Yellow Kid is also famous for its connection to the coining of the term yellow journalism.

I just learned the Ctrl-Return shortcut. Thanks!

Today I learned that my favorite YouTube channel was deleted. It was a music channel, and of course it was copyright stuff. But the thing is, everything I found on there that I liked, I bought. Most of it I'd never heard of and probably would never have, were it not for that exposure. So, I'm kind of bummed about it. There seemed to be plenty of bands who were happy about the exposure they got, too.
