What do you do besides playing music?

I go to the gym almost every day. I got back in to cycling a couple years ago and do several big group rides per year as well as riding on my own as much as possible. I am currently playing bass in a musical theater production, something I had never done before. As soon as that wraps up I am going back to studying martial arts. I got within a few months of testing for my third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do but injured myself and gave it up. I would like to at least get to my third degree black belt!
Going to the gym is important, that and diet, particularly if you want to be able to play when you get older. I lost 45 pounds simply by changing my diet (no carbs, minimal, quality calories of fruits, vegetables and protein, chicken mostly) and doing what I used to do. Run, lift, and ride a stationary bike, and do some core training 4-6 days a week. I started out slow and built up to longer workouts. I lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks without really even trying, it seemed. The change of diet was the big key and undoing poor eating habits. Every other day I run and do bike and core, and every other day I lift, bike and do core. It's made a huge difference, especially at 60. My hands feel great and my energy is very good on nights I play. Last year we played 62 dates over 39 weekends, 4 hours a night mostly, a few times two gigs in one day. You can't survive that if you're not in good shape. One day a week I eat whatever I want, but I don't drink when I play (I bring 3 bottles of water per gig). My weaknesses, mexican food and margaritas. You have to enjoy that once in a while.

Some fascinating pastimes in the 11 pages of this thread so far. Road cycling is mostly what I do when I'm not working, spending time with my family or playing bass. As I'm from Canada, that means winter training in the basement 5 evenings a week. Later in March my brother and I and a few friends are heading down to South Carolina for week on the roads around Brevard. Looking forward to it. Once we're back, I'll ride with our local club, do some charity events and compete in 3 or 4 races during the season. I also commute to work on a bike spring, summer and fall and walk in the winter. Thanks for the thread.

I keep racing pigeons. Have alternated between that and bass playing most of my life. The last five years I have been doing both. Bought an electric guitar and small amp last year and intend to do more playing of guitar and bass as we have been songwriting more and enjoying that.

In the morning and early afternoon before work, I vape and play PC games. At night after work I vape, drink (Bourbon), & watch shows (currently Stark Trek Deep Space 9) or movies. On my days off I do all the above.

I also do a lot of reading at work with my trusty Kindle Paperwhite. I read mostly fiction.

DS9 is ok... I'm a TNG man myself, but I like all of em.

I'm an illustrator. Drew pictures ever since I can remember, so I do that with my kids (when I have them). Had a couple of offers to be a tattoo apprentice, but don't have the time to commit to it, although I love that art style (and my script work draws heavily from that).

I'm talking hobbies, pastimes... extra-curricular activities of whatever sort. What is your NOT-JOB? How do you spend your "free" time?

Myself, i love languages so I've been teaching myself Japanese over the last three months. It's been a hard journey but now I can read most of the average Japanese you might see on a restaurant menu and much of what you'd see in the subtitles in an anime, and I can understand about 30-40% of what someone says in a television show or in real life. Of course, I still need to work hard on my grammar and vocabulary.

So what about you? Do you whittle wood? Race Formula 1 cars? Do you Figure Skate? Or maybe you chew tobacco and practice for the Guiness World record in spitting distance! Let us know!

[Guiness world records doesn't have a listing for actual saliva spitting but there's some interesting stuff to be found here all the same: guinness world record spitting distance - Google Search ]

I cook, love old movies, read historical sport stories, but as I’m about to become unretired next week, time for those things is going to be seventy compromised.
