Ok...

this is the last thing I say before I post a barrage of Hadrien Feraud videos.

Getting fired from a gig is like breaking up, or not getting along with a roommate, or in some rare sad cases, more like a divorce.

Who $#@@ing cares?!?

Who cares what JML said? Who cares what Gary Husband said? Who cares what Hadrien Feraud said? We all have the same amount of access to what went on there as we do to Tom Cruise's divorce with Katie Holmes.

Does it make Hadrien any less of a phenom? Did it hurt him from getting gigs? Was the point of this thread to find out what happened with JML and Hadrien? No.

Now if anyone has the right to come on here and explain themselves, it's Hadrien Feraud. Why you or anybody else with an internet connection feels like you have the inside scoop is beyond me.

Sometimes people get their feelings hurt, act defensively, sometimes people say things and later wish they could take them back. Maybe what JML told Hadrien was something completely different than what JML told somebody else. Maybe Gary didn't like Hadrien's playing and was relieved to see him lose the gig. Maybe Hadrien was oblivious to all of this, maybe Hadrien had a drinking problem (like some claimed) or maybe he played too loud (like others claimed, including JML) or maybe he really had a broken finger (like Hadrien claims).

So everyone wants to cite 3rd party interviews and call Hadrien a liar and not give him the benefit of the doubt and I'm the ******* for waving the BS flag?

IMO Hadrien could have said whatever he wanted about the incident because he was there. If the rest of you are so doggedly committed to whatever version of the story you encountered in your meanderings then there's nothing me, Hadrien, or Jesus could say to change your minds.

But Hadrien is freaking incredible!

I found it interesting that in the thread you linked the first response to Husbands' comments was to flat out contradict what Husbands who was right there playing in the band was saying. Someone's personal taste and opinions formed at a distance don't outweigh the documented first hand evidence from people who are intimately involved. It's fine to have strong opinions but there's an odd disconnect going on here between hero worship and the obvious truth. Husbands' and McLaughlin's comments paint a pretty clear picture.

I wasn't clear. I meant that I didn't really think about about it either way. I saw when he left the band and a little later I got word that he was actually let go but I didn't see anything to support it but I wasn't particularly interested either way. Now I know for sure (or as sure as any of us can) what went down. It doesn't really change my outlook... well besides the fact that I should be sure to reign in my incredible, bass-slaying virtuosity when I inevitably get a gig with a high profile fusion jazz cat .

Those are the breaks yes and he's not the first or the last talented musician to get kicked off of a gig.

Kwesi, Kat's need to stop getting so caught up in turning musicians into gods, doing so really can blind the worshipers.

I definitely agree that the blind idolizing needs to stop though. I tend to ignore it myself.

I understand and respect that Hadrien is your friend but you need to realistically step back from what happened for a moment.

There are people in the industry and some on this board who very well knew about and the actual reason Hadrien got fired a long time before JM publicly let the world know. And Gary Husband worked with Hadrien and his thoughts on Hadrien are not alone with others in the industry. Remember this is a small industry.


JM told the world why he fired Hadrien, all I did was say that he got fired. Come on guys take this up with JM. Maybe you guys can get a petition together in hopes that JM will hire him back and the world that you guys live in will be so much better.


And again for the record I have no issues with Hadrien.

I was just trying to illustrate that his house is built on the foundation of of masterful players that came before him.

I understood what you meant fully. I am still of the opinion that he has begun to build a foundation of his own that is constructed of the bricks of others, and in no way has he attained their level. He can play. Not taking that from him. He has quite a ways to go yet. He is not a master.

IMHO he still has maturity issues regarding playing with other players, and understanding how not to step on them. He can't hold the pocket long enough with out having a "look what I can do" moment, and he looks playfully at the other players as to say "liked that didn't ya". I saw him (unfortunately) at NAMM this year, and really wished I could have those 3 minutes back. I just walked away (actually I spent more time than that listening to the guy, but I am ashamed to admit it in public).

Most of his "melodic chops" sound like nothing more than warmed over chordal finger exercises IMHO (albiet toss in a few diminished scales with a few 7ths and 11ths, with an inversion here or there....just stay away from the major scales) played with a 3 or 4 fingered right hand technique. Of course I am slightly minimizing what is being done.....or am I????

I can't really argue with you because it's pretty clear that you're not too fond of the guy. Sure you're not reading into the facial expressions a bit much though? It always looked to me like he was just having fun. You ever see Janek Gwizdala play? That dude has a BALL! I see plenty of musicians smile and stuff at other players while they jam and it's never looked anything but innocent to me... though there's a guy that I know personally that stares into your soul when he solos. That is BEYOND creepy.

I've had about all I care to expose myself to from the armchair quarterbacks in the bassists section here.

Just off the top of my head I recall the following remarks about the world's best bass players offered in this shrine of virtuosity, the Talkbass "Bassists" section:

"Steve Bailey can't play in tune, Victor Wooten plays too many notes, Richard Bona always plays the same lick, Tal Wilkenfeld is only famous because she's a girl, Janek Gwizdala and Matt Garrison are overrated, Jeff Berlin's tone doesn't mix well and he's an egomaniac, Carol Kaye is old and irrelevant, Hadrien Feraud can't keep a gig" and most recently, "only plays warmed over chordal finger exercises..."

But you guys, you guys are all simply the Best! Carry on, I gotta see which one of Hadrien's gigs I can catch...so many choices!

I have an appreciation for all who pick up the instrument. Some have more skill sets than others. I'm just not for the "my hero is better than yours" thing...especially when you have cats that are still learning their craft with much room for growth and improvement.

Dude, I saw Etienne Mbappe make childs play of Hadrien's playing without breaking a sweat OR BREAKING THE GROOVE! As they were playing Etienne was fielding questions, and holding down a fat groove for Hadrien as if they were in different booths (meaning he was listening and supporting but not DEPENDING on him) then when he soloed he did some really tasty stuff, that is until Hadrien stepped on the groove! Etienne started talking again to someone in the audience and began to mimic Hadriens runs, cleaner, faster, and funkier than Hadrien....and went back to holding the groove. It was as to say "if you wanted step on me this is how you should have done it".

Kwesi, there is a difference between smiling, having a good time, and stepping on somebody musically. He invades their musical space at inappropriate times, from what I've seen...not cool. It's kinda like the one kid in class that always blurts out the answer to a question before the teacher can finish it. Great! You are smart, but you fail socially.

I have no personal beef with Hadrien. I just don't find what he does impressive, that's all. I have seen it before, still see it now, and see it done better. He has potential. The fact that he has been crowned as one of the greats already is a distraction to me. That's like saying a second year NFL player is headed to he Hall of Fame as an all time great! He still has developing to do. He has done nothing groundbreaking! He has added nothing to he landscape of music culture that is signature or innovative

And for the record, it is no secret on TB that I am no fan of Janek....and even HE KNOWS IT!
