What happened to the 62-63 Shell Pink JB Thread?

First amendment be damned.

Just for the record, on a private system such as TB, the rights of the First Amendment do not apply. This is a private system, the rules of which we have all agreed to upon our acceptance of terms at time of signup. They could demand that we all wear pink bunny suits when we use the system if they wanted, and we would be in violation of the terms if we didn't.

yes. well said, sir.

It's still hiding:hiding: in the shadows, Very very soon to come back out:bassist:

most of you know what's going on by now and I hope to have a new thread up by Monday at the latest for you guys.
If not here somewhere and you guys will know where you have my word.

It was real and in no way a joke, hoax, or figment of your imagination. Contrary to Green with Envy's Men in Pink suits theory lol the men in black suits and blue suits have been working very very hard to make sure all is well and it comes back very soon.:hyper:

I promised all of you an update, and so far the last thing is the official appraisal which really will be the last question left to answer. Is it really a Shell Pink Fender Jazz Bass
This is what I know so far.
The serial#/Neck plate Put it as a 62
The neck stamp puts it as a 62
The potentiometer codes put it as a 62
The color has been held up to not just multiple computer screens of different color resolutions, I also have a family member who works for a GM shop that deals with a lot of old cars and we test painted a small sample on some scrap wood let it dry and compared colors and as far as I can tell and everyone else it is indeed Shell Pink.
The neck pocket shows only shell pink and no other color.
Now that's not to say it wasn't a burst at some point and it's just hard to see. Maybe it was but that is where the appraisal will come into play.
So far though everything checks out 100%

And for the record people, I was never unable to pull it apart, Just too nervous. I finally got over it and told myself, it's just a guitar like the others. I took my time, locked myself in a quite room with a ton of extra light and went to town with a very expensive gunsmithing tool set.
It went fine, felt like surgery at times but all is well. She came apart with ease and is safe and sound, back in her box.

And for those that have an issue with me not being a Bass player, I am a guitar player #1,,,, and I now, due to this whole situation have a deep interest in learning bass too.
Should be picking up a new Bass and amp from a buddy next week.

Tanks everyone for your patients, Your help, your understanding and most of all your support throughout all of this.
Fingers crossed it makes it to its destination for the appraisal in one piece and home safe again.

If any of you have any questions, feel free to ask if I left anything out.

And also no hard feelings to the community legal team, If anything you guys definitely helped me to make sure my butt was covered.
If you guys have interest feel free to jump in, but I will be leaving my legal issues in my lawyers office from now on, (My fault not yours). Probably would'a had a much different approach, had I known exactly what I had just purchased at the time.

Lol now watch I'll get the appraisal and they'll say wait sir, ummmmm, you do know,,,ah,,,, Fender is only spelled with one "d" right?

It'll end up being some cheap knock off from Japan and it'll be some simple little thing I overlooked, Like the Fender logo speled Fendder or something.:crying:

Honestly I can't wait to find out. :hyper:

We're not quite there yet on the pics everything will come in time. I really hope by Monday at the latest.

I asked the mods for their permission to start a new thread on the subject.

I figured with all the drama of the last one and them having to get involved and have to come police a bunch of adults myself included from fighting and carrying on. It's only right I make sure and clear it with them before posting another thread.

I will post it as soon as I hear back from them, I assure you.

As long as it's not an issue all pics will go back up soon.

I have been discussing the possibilities with another member of making a separate page should the mods not be okay with it maybe on Facebook or something. Who knows I would completely understand if they wanted none of it here ever again.

If it is a 62 shell Pink Jazz Bass I know just from my research this past week it's a pretty rare find.

I definitely want all of you to be able to see it too.

I really wish we all could have sat around and discussed the Bass from the start to be honest.
and that is my ultimate goal. I'm curious about everyone's combined knowledge on how something like this happened considering I have been told at least 150 times since the day I bought it that it just IS NOT POSSIBLE, Fender didn't have a Shell Pink for the Jazz Bass in 62. This is what Hollywood Guitar Center vintage shop tells me, He tells me that my bass is one of two things.
It is either Fiesta Red faded. I know damn well there's nothing faded on the thing.
Or he says that someone had it refinished. and that he has studied this extensively for this many years "1996" I believe I was told.
So I hope he is wrong I really do.
I know it's definitely NOT Fiesta Red never was not a chance at all.

So who knows, We'll see what the appraiser says about the finish. It has cracks running all through it "Checking" I know. lol

He also tells me that Flea's Bass is not a 61 Shell Pink that his is also a faded Fiesta Red. I'm not sure how much stock I'm putting into this guy in Hollywood but maybe he's right, We will most certainly see.

I missed the original thread, but I wanna see a pic of this bass. It always surprises me at what the mods on this board moderate, considering how many racist comments I see coming up all the time that don't get touched. That wouldn't go down on most other forums I frequent.

Anyway, original point, pics please!

Well you know if a Guitar Center employee tells you there was no Shell Pink in '62, it must be true ... :hmm:

The guys at Reranch beg to differ.

Reputed to be one of the rarest of the Fender custom colors it was first seen on the 1956 DeSotos. It was in the Fender lineup until 1963. Shell Pink looks best with a white pickguard and a pair of black and white patent leather loafers.

The DuPont color sheet for the 1956 DeSoto car line. Note the use of "Shell Pink", paint number 2371, second from the bottom. Originally this color was available only in Enamel. But DuPont also offered a nitrocellulose lacquer version of this color later as paint shops preferred using lacquer for repair work. Fender too bought the nitrocellulose version from 1960 to 1963 when Shell Pink was an official custom color.

So, while it may be a rare thing, it was certainly available and not an impossibility as the GC expert claims. Furthermore, a faded Fiesta Red would show much less fading in areas not exposed to UV, such as under the neck plate, pick guard, bridge, etc. It shouldn't take much to dispel that notion.

No reason to be upset with the mods guys in anyway, I am the one who asked for the thread to be taken down.

I have also asked permission to start a new one leaving all legal stuff out of it and just focus on the bass and the discussion that comes along with it.

I feel it's only right to hold of until they have a chance to decide if they want it up. I mean we must remember we are in their house and especially me I just showed up and barely wiped my feet at the door.

I was kinda like the drunk neighbor that shows up uninvited to Thanksgiving dinner and picks a fight with all the company.

So none the less I don't even have the appraisal just yet I will have it by Monday though.

Lol I tried to tell him but he just reminded me about how stupid I was and how superior he was and how he has been studying these things since "1996" and that it isn't possible.

I mean I can only argue so much with a guy that swears he's right.
I tried to explain that I had a pink finish and that I knew what pink was, I also said that I knew what red was I was familiar with the Fender colors. I assume to him it's the unicorn of the Jazz Bass I guess.
I just can't possibly no way no how have a Shell Pink 62 J Bass.
I even asked him if he was soooooooo sure than he'd certainly have no problem with me calling him back after the appraisal and letting him know he was wrong.
In his defense he said "No Please do" I'd be shocked or something to that effect.
He says he thinks that it was later resprayed by someone else.

Which again is his defense is very possible, I'm sure though it will all be revealed in the appraisal.

Gotcha. Well no offence intended towards the moderators then. Like I said I missed the original thread so I'm just going off what I'm seeing here. Lookimg forward to hearing more on Monday. Good luck with it mate.

1996 was the first year I considered retiring from the business.
He is probably basing his extensive knowledge on Fender Custom Shop's "'64 Relic Shell Pink Jazz Bass", which, based on the information provided above, would be an anachronism. Wouldn't be the first time a Fender repro was not accurate, like the slab of rosewood on the neck of the Noel Redding signature bass, which is supposed to be a repro of a '65.

To my knowledge, not only did Fender discontinue the color, the supplier, Dupont, did so as well some time in the 60's and only reintroduced it in recent years. If you look at Shell Pink repros done in the interim, they are usually off by a shade or two.

Curtis Novak also concurs;

Also, those of us who had links to pictures of the bass deleted them voluntarily. The mods didn't delete them.

To this day, I see references to a fender color called coral pink. There was no such fender color. That was Fiesta Red that had faded into a pastel pinkish color. There is a big difference in color between shell pink and a faded Fiesta Red.

That and the fading will be uneven, as it is caused by exposure to UV light. Protected areas will be closer to the original color.

Agreed 100%
The Fiesta Fade is not even remotely close to Shell Pink, At least not in the versions and examples I've seen.

If you ever gig with that bass, you will have to pull up to the venue in this ...

1958ImperialSedan05.jpg

I actually wouldn't mind that one bit.

I'd kill to have a car like that and a professional photographer to do a shoot with this bass that car and I don't know some really pretty 50's 60's dressed model.

I may just have to call my buddy up who does things like that, However I wonder what the odds are of finding a car like that anywhere??????

Ok stop twisting my arm I'm gonna post one pic of under the pick guard. Damn it. :rollno:

And a neck stamp too I guess is in store :D

Ok that's it till Monday, lol I'm scared to show more I'm getting all superstitious about it like the appraisal will be compromised or my luck will turn bad or something.
