What happened to the 62-63 Shell Pink JB Thread?

I honestly believe the thing has sat in it's case for a very very long time.

I'm not real surprised it's not faded, the neck is completely free of ANY oil build up at all. It is seriously a very clean clean guitar.

I didn't say you were unable to, but I may have said something to the effect that you "didn't know how to". You seemed confused when asked to remove the pickup covers, :help: and someone had to point them out to you. Not suggesting you aren't handy with tools, just that perhaps you were unfamiliar with the terminology and parts of the instrument. I'm sure you've learned a lot about that in the last 48 hours. :hyper:

OK, well I purposely didn't mention the site or use the exact wording because some guy there is showing how you can use google cache to see the original thread. I didn't try it to see if it worked, but just in case, didn't want to make it easy to find.

But yeah, that's the one.

Love the commentary that TB is "...more heavily infested with unhelpful contributors."

I saw that too and wasn't able to do it. But it's water under the bridge at this point.
I was a little worried for a few days, But at this point I really don't care what anyone tries or attempts.

To try to help answer your question, if it can be determined that the refin was done at the Fender factory, I don't believe that it devalues the bass one penny.

Now, as for whether a pro appraiser can determine for 100 percent sure that a refin was performed at the factory as opposed to later, that I can't answer. There are some experts here that would know more about that than me and I'll let them take a crack at that question.

Now that's not to say it wasn't a burst at some point and it's just hard to see. Maybe it was but that is where the appraisal will come into play.
So far though everything checks out 100%

first of all, glad to see you got the legal stuff sorted out.
I didn't participate in the mess going on in the original thread but I have to admit the slightest chance of the whole thing not being legit left me with a bitter taste as a bassist who hopes that one day, in the very distant future his children will inherit and enjoy my basses, guitars and amps when I'm gone.

now regarding the burst - keep in mind a lot of Fender's custom colors back then in the pre-CBS days were painted over a standard finish. with Sunburst being the most common under layer. Fender would stockpile standard finish bodies and repaint (often without any sealer coat) an off the shelf finished body whenever a custom color order from an authorized dealer came in. that's a pretty much characteristic Fender practice as Leo's mindset seems to have been focused on how to maximize yield and save costs thus resulting in myths and urban legends such as attributing the origin of position marker dots on Fenders of your's vintage to the leftover clay or asbestos floor tiles Leo had laying around in the Fullerton factory or the headstocks' design interlocking to save materials when cutting the maple blocks for individual necks.

so if you've got traces of Sunburst showing through in the neck pocket, pickup cavities etc. the bass may still be wearing a factory finish.
I'm sure a good vintage guitar appraiser could tell if the finish is original or not.

Yeah I believe someone referred to the felt mutes and I was like huh?

The covers were brought up too and as I'm sure is obvious I have never seen or touched anything with the ash tray covers before, when the question was asked I was not in the same room with the bass and really had very little clue what was being asked of me.

But C'mon give me a lil credit I mean it was only two screws, and I mean even my 3 year old knows left is loose and right is tight.

No worries though, I'll be the first to admit I really had no clue what you guys were asking me when it came to the mutes and whatever the hell else that area was referred to that night.

I am happy to admit when I'm not sure about something.

Plus remember I had a ton on my mind that night I came home with a $100 bass and by that time I was getting figures in the $30,000 ball park I was a bit overwhelmed.

Let's face it, from the pictures, this bass looks good. In order to realize its true value, it would need to be apprised by a renowned appraiser like George Gruhn. Evrything posted here is gossip and speculation.

Thanks for starting it up all over again 77PBass. The rest of us appreciate that you are vastly morally superior than the rest of us.

You know what 1Shot, the same cast of characters are going to start it up all over again. I'd abort your mission and leave this place for good. The forum doesn't deserve to participate in this historic find, nor any future historic finds. I'm being serious. No second chance. Abort mission and take it elsewhere.

To answer the question about affect on value....the reason this would have such a high value is the rarity of the color. If it was found that it was a non-factory refinish than it's original value would drop to that of a standard 62 Jazz (still a high value but not as high as the rare color). And then on top of that you would probably have to cut that value to account for the refinish. Since it's in such nice condition it probably wouldn't half the value (as is common) but it would take a good chunk off. So the bottom line is that the difference between an authentic Pink 62 and a refinished one would be a pretty substantial difference.

As far as validating whether it was a factory refinish, that might be tough. If the finish is over sunburst while it's a common Fender practice the lack of aging on the finish would probably make some people question the authenticity a bit and affect the value some. Your absolute best bet is to have it not be an overspray finish at all.

Yeah I did some pretty extensive reading on how they did the stuff with the nails and looking for the nail holes w/o paint in them, also that they switched to using a stick in late 62 and on myneck pocket I have what looks like just pink only except the very lip of the neck pocket.

That I have to admit still makes me nervous.

Whoa what is that about?

I guess you still feel I'm this horrible monster?

No I don't. I read the story you sent me. It sounds plausible but clearly is your perspective. If it was me, I would not be flaunting that bass on this board until I had my ducks in a row. Even then, I would know that at least half the posters here would pillory me. I'll take at face value your join date.

As far as Karma is concerned, the wheel spins constantly. It is not influenced by what I or others think or say, it just spins.

I was making no judgement. I was merely pointing out a force that is constant an uncontrollable.

If you don't like the thread, don't read it and don't post.

Yeah your right and it spun what looks like a $20-$30 thousand dollar bass right smack into my lap fair and square. Thanks Karma I've been waiting for you for a while.

Not to mention I don't believe in Santa Clause the Easter Bunny The Tooth Ferry or your so called mythical Karma.

Seems like maybe you should follow your own advice, And yes I just joined the thread, Common sense would tell you if this is my first Bass Guitar than this would logically be the first time I would seek Bass guitar ANYTHING and then I would logically join.
At some point and time you were a new member, just as everyone else. It has nothing to do with my credibility whatsoever.

OK, 77, you were making no judgment. My mistake.

I would like to make one request, and then that's all I can do.

Dear TB community. Can we please not make moral judgments this time around? Can we please not send out our detectives and expert lawyers and just focus on the bass this time? This is a bass forum, and a lot of us are interested in this historic find and want to follow along. It's an open forum and nobody can stop you from posting whatever you want to, but as a favor to some of us morally inferior members, can we just focus on the bass so that we get to participate in this piece of history?

Just a humble request for your fellow TB buddy GreenWithEnvy.

Okay I'm not sure why your even here man, You come into the discussion obviously harboring ill feelings towards me or the situation you stick around long enough to absorb some info and then you start spewing your childish beliefs in magical ferry tale powers of karma and sorcery.

And why do you really believe that your preaching is going to change anything?
Do you honestly believe me or anyone else here in this community care to hear it?

If YOU don't like the thread or the post and YOU don't believe it kindly go elsewhere.

Nobody is forcing you to stick around and entertain me my story my bass my anything, just put down the pop corn seek entertainment elsewhere and let the people that want to talk talk.
