Sorry for your loss. I'm glad you're safe. I live in the east part of San Diego county in the foot hills and I'm a little on edge due to the current whether conditions. The 2003 cedar fire came close to my house.

Sadly now be on the lookout for identity theft and fraud. These things are happening in significant volume up in the Napa area in the weeks and months following the fires up here. Verify the authenticity of folks you are working with for resolution, and question whenever anyone asks for personal information.

Glad you knew what to prioritize. IDK what I would've done. With the threat of the Rye and Creek fire looming ever so close, we almost shared the same fate. Fortunately, I had rehearsal the night before so half my gear was still unloaded from my car when news broke out. I would probably try to grab the rest and definitely my puppy. No kids, yet.

I grew up in La Crescenta, so the fire/flood/earthquake cycle was a part of my life for many years. And as homes keep getting built higher and higher into the foothills, this kind of thing is bound to happen.

I'm going to get this blown up into a black & white and framed. It will go into my new house as a reminder.

Sorry about your loss. On the 4th of July a few years back the HFD gave us 10 minutes to evacuate in the face of a wind-driven brush fire some idiot had started with fireworks. We grabbed our passports, laptops, the dog and left. The next morning we were allowed to return. The fire had been stopped about 100 yards from our house. Taking my basses was not important to me. Best of luck rebuilding.

I'm glad you and the family made it out alright. At least you were able to save some items. That fire moved fast and covered a lot of ground.

I always tell myself if a fire was headed my way I'd grab my hard drive, 76p and 08p.

Regarding harddrive, if you have the means to keep one fully backed up and offsite (at work, in a lockbox at a bank), that's a smart way to go. You may never need it... but if you do, you're all set.

Eager to hear from the OP and how the replacement/reimbursement process works with their insurance company.

So sorry you had to go through this. This sounds so similar to the fires up here in Santa Rosa, with some having so little time to evacuate that they just had the clothes on their backs. I'm glad you were able to get your family to safety and a few items as well.

This is true, I've been hearing reports about this in Santa Rosa as well.

man, I just knew we were going to have TBers impacted by all these So Cal fires.
so relieved to hear you are ok, family, etc. my heart goes out to everyone impacted.

I live 1 mile from the base of the San Gabriel mountains.
I used to think I was safe because a fire would have to burn thru a mile of homes before I would be impacted.
That was before this year, and Sonoma/Thomas changed all that.
The devastatingly fast movement of fire fueled by 60 mph Santa Ana winds is just unimaginable.
I'm glad I have insurance.

one last thing.
my wife has mandated the pecking order on what stays and goes. I can't fit the scrapbooks and my upright into the same vehicle. That's one that's going to be sacrificed if we ever have to bug out in 20 minutes. bummer.
