The questions revolves around the “thumb rest”
Is that like a towel hook that someone threw on there? Or is this a thumb rest I simply have yet to encounter?

It's a nuisance honestly. Lol a stupid rag holder someone threw on there. I'd take it off immediately.
 
Well it is Guitar center. I mean we should be so honoured that they even sell basses let alone know what a 6 string bass is vs a 505 that they slap a meat hook on and call it a 506. Btw I really like my 505. It's a hell of a nice bass from Ibanez. Ignore the delicate finish and the rest is an awesome bass.

I’m rocking a SR406 right now. That is a beaut tho. I like that active bands on the 4 series vs the 5. They all sound good tho.

It's a B string mute

Just pull the string up and hook it onto that dealy. Voila!
