What is your favorite DI for live use?

I know that is just your opinion...but as someone who owns U5 and JDI (i've tried other radial boxes too)...the JDI is flat, but the U5 is not flat. The U5 has preset EQ curves with a boost...sounds amazing, but DEFINITELY colors the sound. If you are setting it flat, there is no point to getting it.

I'd just like to point out that there is a point to it if you set it flat and that it's not only a DI but also a preamp. Thus I use mine both to drive my power amp and send a signal to the PA. And I leave it set flat all the time.

I have the latest version of the REDDI.. I think i got mine around March or somewhere around then.. but at that point they started to incorporate a thru output on the front.. They moved the power switch to the rear....
So the front has an XLR out, XLR/1/4" in , 1/4' thru, Volume, blue laser LED..

The thing is amazing.. I have done
alot of work with tim kimsey.. he is a grammy winning engineer.. He said it is the best DI he has ever used.. when i bring mine in he smiles... he also said it extends the lows way smoother than other devices he has used.. he has ears of gold so i listen to waht he says.. my REDDI is a keeper.

How do you deal with not having a through output?

Still usin' my XLR Y-cord and diggin' the purity ; }
And I still don't know what you mean :confused:

Y-cord: one connector at one end, two connectors at other. XLR: The type of connector prefered for line level balanced operation.

No circuitry involved other than that.

alright, i'll chime in here. I've been using the all tube Eclair Evil Twin and it sounds wonderful. It's got all the features you'd want in a DI. the down side it set me back eight and a half. The nice fellow who builds them lives up the street from I used to reside. He's a real audiophile and apparently a terrific engineer. His "costumer service" is priceless.

Yes, right, but basses have 1/4" outputs and are unbalanced. You seem to be implying you don't use a DI at all, but theres a step missing there :confused:

I use relatively flat cabs onstage, and little EQ, but I do prefer post-effects signal going to house, and any dynamic/interactive changes I make via footcontrollers reflected in the final mix.

DI needn't be right after the bass.

And there's little that's "purer" than a 1-into-2 balanced signal without any additional circuitry ; }

Seriously GB, you know I'm usually on the same page as you, but I gotta say I don't understand what you're saying here. If you want to say you are taking a balanced tap off an external preamp, and sending that to the house, then that is a DI. If instead you are saying your bass has a balanced active output jack onboard, then that is a DI. So you are using a DI, it's just not packaged and labeled "DI". But you know that packaging is not the same as function. So what are you using, since it's obviously not a TS split to two XLR's?

I am not sure I follow this either, greenboy. Isn't one of the functions of a DI to change a high impedence, unbal. signal to a low impedence balanced signal? Without a transformer or some other cicuitry, I don't see how your Y-cord is doing this. Some basses (Alembic, Wal) d have balanced low-impedence outputs on board, and some preamps (Demeter, high-end mic pre's) have 1/4" balanced outs. Are you taking a bal. line out and simply adapting it to an XLR? Please illuminate a bit.......

Sure, if you are inserting DI right after the bass, that's a needed feature. But if you are placing DI after preamp and effects, not needed. Which I pretty much said a few posts back - that I was going post-effects and that any changes I made with footcontrollers I wanted to be reflected FOH.

The signal out of my preamp is exactly the same signal I send to board, for live. I don't use onstage speaker cabs that have adversely different response curves in a real-world environment than what a good PA has (which is why as a sound engineeer I would not want most people's POST-EQ send), so I find that this strategy works very well for me and eliminates a lot of fiddle-farting around with gear interfacing and onstage/FOH sound discrepancies ; }
