Oh man, I still remember the worst gig I ever played...sorta...you will find out what I mean.
It was in the middle of summer here in Australia, the temp was 43 degrees celsius (110 farenheit) inside the venue and it was about 90% humidity. We were a 6 piece thrash metal band playing a battle of the bands with 8 bands on the bill that night, and we were playing last. The venue had absolutely NO form of air conditioning or fans and their idea of cooling the venue was to open the doors, which is worse during such high humidity. I remember watching all the other bands playing that night and they were all drenched by the end of their set and the fact it was getting hotter and stickier as the night wore on wasn't helping. It's 11pm and time for us to go on stage. As I start setting up, I am absolutely mortified.
Now, the bathroom smell referred to in this thread so frequently doesnt bother me too much. I have been running bars and pubs since I was 18, so I am kinda used to that smell. But the smell of body odour on that stage was seriously something else. Because of the lack of ventilation in the venue, the stage had built up this almost ambient stench. Then we started playing...
It got worse and worse as we went through our set, we all started to pour sweat. Most of the time when I come across a bad smell, I breath through my mouth, but you couldn't that night or you could taste it...which made you wanna puke more. By the end of our hour long set, we were all gagging and about 10lb lighter from sweat loss. We won the battle that night, I think we all channeled our disgust somehow and we actually played an absolute brutal set that got that mosh moving (crazy in that heat). Will never forget that night.
Cheers,
Jordan
