What was your first bass guitar?

a squier p-bass special, which was converted to fretless (ie - pulled the frets out with pliers), took it apart, neck ended up in a bon fire, and now the body sits at my parent's house. eventually i'll refinish the body, get a new neck/hardware/pickups and rebuild the thing. eventually...

So many cool firsts on here. Mine is so bloomin boring.......... 94 or 95 Squier Yellow and white P-Bass.... Looking back on it it was fine for a first instrument to learn on. I bought an ATK in 96 instead of going on spring break with my bros---I still have that ATK so good move. I sold that P to get the last 50 or so bucks for the ATK---the good ol days

Mine was a short scale, with a black-to-metallic gray burst paint job. It was pretty, but the bridge was crap and it wouldn't hold a setup, and the P-copy pickup sounded like mud. I sometimes wonder what happened to it.

Wow, I didn't know they were still making them in the eighties. Interesting. I wish I still had mine, just for sentimental value. I bought mine in 1964.

Got my first bass around 1988. It was a black 3/4 scale Mach1 (not to be confused with the more popular Aria Mach1 instruments). It had one P-style pickup in it, its hard to describe the body style, it was a double-cut with short pointy horns but in no way like an SG and in retrospect was not a terrible instrument. Fairly solid, decent action and respectable sound for what it was. One cool feature was the tuning keys, my g string tuner stripped so I bought a replacement...problem was it was a mirror image of the other three...so naturally I installed it upside-down, creating a kind of music man look with three tuners facing up and one down. Unfortunately it was another classic case of lending it to a "friend" and never seeing it again... Although it would have no place in my current collection is still like to have it around for sentimental reasons.

My first was an Oscar Schmidt (by Washburn) Acoustic/Electric. I really put it through the ringer... I had a strap button installed and promptly bashed the headstock on the ceiling fan in my bedroom, the input jack was the old style to the right of the endpin and I busted it through the body twice and later installed an endpin type jack (which we used a regular drill to get the size right, which destroyed the wood and finish surrounding it...), lent it to a youth group kid for a while, then pawned it eventually. It played decently, but wasn't anything awesome. Sometimes I wish I had taken better care of it, but all in all I don't regret selling it.
