What was your first bass guitar?

Mine was an Arbor P-bass copy with an ugly pointy headstock. The body looked like it was dipped in white plastic, then splattered with paint, and the action was an inch high. I still have it, but only for nostalgia!

Mine was about the same. A black Hondo "Fame" P-bass copy. the bridge and wood were actually sweet and I too wish I still had it. Tried buying it back form the person I sold it to 9 years after the fact. Left her a message and never heard back.

My first bass was a ~1980 Fender P-Bass, white w/ white pickguard. I think it was MIJ, but I'm not really sure. I later replaced the pickups with some Seymour-Duncans (didn't help much). I actually wanted black with a white or silver pickguard, but my parents bought the bass for me as a Christmas present and I couldn't complain about the choice they made. It was alright but the neck had a terrible dead spot at the 5th fret on the G string. It was a pain to try and work around. I played that bass for several years until I sold it to my brother. I later bought a Yamaha TRB-II 4 which I still have.

A Fender Jazz Special.

Real 80's type of bass. Black headstock and neck, rosewood fingerboard, Precision body, PJ pickups and black hardware.

It was mettalic mauve. Really. :p

Hmm... almost have to take a trip in the Wayback Machine to remember it... My first bass was a mid-60's Ventura p-bass replica... i guess. It had a single humbucking pickup that hid under a wide chrome piece, with a matching chrome cover over the bridge. finished in sunburst with a jazz-style (1.25" wide at the nut) rosewood fingerboard.

I got it with a hard case, strap, cords, and a Kalamazoo bass head and 1x15" cab, all for $100 from a college student that needed to buy textbooks...

Fender Squier Bronco bass.....cheap little red bass with rosewood fretboard and white pickgaurd. One pup if I remember right. Two knobs. Simple as can be, but perfect for a complete newbie to musical instruments.

I wailed away on that thing through this little Kay guitar amp. After a few months, I thought I owned the coolest bass in the world.

That was until I joined TB, and realized what I was missing out on.

The first bass I owned was a white Squier Jazz bass, if I remember correctly it was made in Japan (Got it new in '93) and wasn't all that bad actually. I put a Kahler trem on it, solely because I came across one in a guitar store and was pretty amazed that they even existed. Big mistake. Not long after that, I came across some really heavy gauge strings. bought em, put them on, tuned up, did some crazy thing with the whammy bar, broke the nut and warped the neck.

So I brought it down to a friend of a friend who did guitar/bass mods/repairs/etc, to get the neck straightened and a new nut installed. Not only did he manage to bend the neck even more, but he also managed to do such a crappy job on the nut - string spacing was totally irregular. Never heard from him again after that.

I still have the body - tossed the neck out years ago. Don't know what to do with it tho, since it has the Kahler bridge route (still have the Kahler too).

Sounds like Burgandy Mist. My first bass was the exact same model, except mine was MAGENTA (hot pink). Not that I'm bragging, mind you.

My first bass was a really weird knock off. It was a Toledo (anybody else ever hear of this brand, I've searched on the net but found nothing). It had 2 steel covered humbuckers, one tone, one volume control, a toggle switch and it waid nearly 20 pounds. It had the fattest, least playable neck I've ever seen. I played it until I got my MIM fender P, which I still own today.
