What was your first bass guitar?

My first baby was a Squier Precision Standard Special 5 5-string. Shoreline gold finish, rosewood fretboard...still own it, too. I don't play it as much, since I bought my Ibanez BTB, but pretty soon, I shall be customizing it.

Future specs:

- Silver metallic finish
- Black (mirror) pickgaurd
- Badass Bridge II
- Basslines Vintage Jazz pups
- Fender Taperwounds (always and forever)
- Fender logo on headstock instead of Squier (see Xavier's Squier ;) )

Eventually, I'll figure out some more ways to improve/'soop it up.

Well, to be honest, I don't know what my first bass was. I got it used from a friend and he got it used from his cousin and so on... It had been repainted several times, thus it lacked any writen identifications. It had 15 frets and a badly warped neck and sounded like I was playing with distortion and Wah when I pluged in. None the less, it was alright for starters (well worth my $10 investment).

The first bass that I ever purchased new was a Washburn XB 100.

Bruno Conqueror.

Hollow body w/ matching f-holes, cream binding, red burst, wooden floating bridge, one pick up with exposed poles, flatwounds. 1 1/2" action was the best you could get. Sounded like mud. Boy was it beautiful.

In about 1970, bought a bright red Hagstrom from my next door neighbor. As I remember, everything on that bass was plastic, including the neck. But it worked. I think it had 3 pickups. I have no idea whether it was any good or not by today's standards. Second bass was a (probably stolen) upside down Thunderbird with one pickup and most of the pickguard cut away. Paid $100 for it. Had a second serial number impressed over the first. Great bass that was stolen from me in about 1973 when I shipped was shipping it home from college.

In 1971, I was 10 years old, my dad bought me a really cool hollowbody with the f holes. I don't think it was a Gibson, think it probably was an Epiphone. I remember it had a honey burst finish and dual humbuckers. Man I loved that bass. It burned up in a house fire. We barley got out alive, much less trying to save stuff. Memories of that old bass have got me looking at the Jack Casady bass and at some of the vintage stuff

Mine was a '76 Epiphone ET-285, purchased new. I sold it 6 months later to buy a new '76 Gibson Thunderbird, which I still have. Here is a picture of me playing the Epiphone, through a solid state Marshall bass amp. Hard to believe I was ever that young...

My first bass was a 1967 Japanese made Tele-Star Semi-Acoustic Teardrop shaped bass that I bought new back then. It has a Sunburst finish with 2 single coil pick-ups. It was pretty cool back then. I traded a Harmony H-77 6-string electric straight up for it.
I still have and it's in great shape considering its 35 yrs old.:) I just love the shape and look of it.
I'll try to tag a recent picture of her here.

For $100 used, I bought a bass from a brand called "Anea". I've never seen another bass from this brand since then, and to be honest it was a pretty crappy bass. But your first bass doesn't need to be that nice, you should get a low-to mid range one to make sure you're serious about it. Since then I've upgraded to a Washburn XB-200, which in December I traded in for a Fender MIA Jazz.
