My first bass was a Peavy Fury 4 string bass. Black with a maple neck and fingerboard. I converted it into a fretless bass because I couldn't stand the sound of it!! I acctually sounded much better as a fretless. Sold it of course. I had to pay for a used Kramer 700st!! Man...that bass sucked too. I'm glad those days are over!!

I got a used beat up Epiphone rock bass (P-bass copy) for $100 as my first bass.I smashed it to bits! I still have the hard shell case for it but it needs new latches. 
My first bass was a 2001 MIM Fender P-bass. Perhaps I should sell it - I never touch it now that I have my Jazz.
I inherited a Memphis P bass copy(1970's, when they were really good copies) from my dad's church. Then he had to sell it and some other stuff to buy food for the family after getting laid off.
For the next 3 1/2 years, the only bass that I could call my own was a defretted acoustic guitar rescued from the dumpster and strung up with the heaviest green nylon weedeater string I could find.
Finally bought a Peavey T-40 when I was 17 or 18.

My first bass approximately 20 years ago was a sunburst Univox Precision copy. I think, as a 15year-old back then, I paid $230.00 of my hard-earned cleaning-out-racehorse-stalls money for it. Rather appropriate that I cleaned up horse manure to purchase a piece of horse manure. I hope that the Univox is enjoying life somewhere as a boat anchor.
I got my first bass in the late sixties. It was a really bad Univox--white--sort of a Mosrite copy. I kept it about a year until I could "upgrade" to a Hagstrom (8 stringer, of all things) and eventually traded the Hag for a Hofner (which I loathed). I played the Hofner all through High School. I bought my first Fender in '78, a beautiful maple-neck Precision fretless that I still own. Man, I feel old all of a sudden...

You sure did. I have a couple hundred Zappa quotes and try to rotate them daily. Just so someone doesn't look tomorrow and wonder WTH you're talking about, today's signature was

The Hohner copy I had on the first page of this thread was pretty much the same - high action, dead strings, solid mahogany bridge.
I loved that bass.

Ibanez TR500 4string. Everyone I talk to says they suck, but I still love it. I have a Hohner B bass V professional. I love that too. The 'Nez is an awesome bass.

It looked kinda like a Fender, but it was a far cry. My friend and cousin each got Fender Jazzes, vintage 1972. Should have convinced the parents to make the investment then.
First bass : 1977 Jazz copy by Pace, with a 50 watt amp from Stage.
Second bass : 1993 Squire black 5 string, with a Crate 10 watt amp.
Third bass : 2001 Peavey Cirrus 4, with a Peavey TKO 115 amp.

Dad got me a used Noble in '68. Terrible bass, terrible action. I didn't know any better and actually learned a lot of fundamentals on the thing.
