Whatcha watching?

Better Off Dead.
One of my favorites the first time I watched it, and it still is almost 40 years later.

I bought that one on disc a few years ago since at the time it wasn't available to stream. So great!
Watching YouTube offerings. Wife loves Shark Week, which started tonite. I lose the evening TV for a week LOL.

I love Karen Carpenter. Found this 6 min. clip of The Carpenters playing for wounded soldiers, back from Vietnam, at Walter Reed Hospital in 1970. Just kinda nice to see them (band, too) outdoors doing a gig instead of a concert. Always loved and respected the bass playing in all of their works.

They did a medley of shortened versions of their familiar songs

The Carpenters' vocals are so amazing, especially Karen's. And while playing the drums, no less!

BTW that medley is track 9 on their Carpenters album from 1971, with "Close To You" added at the beginning.

Will Denzel at any point smack a cup out of someone's hand or off a table and/or will he tell someone to get their damn hands off of him? I'll be very disappointed of one of these things doesn't happen.

It's good that Ridley Scott is directing. It might be worth watching because of that. But I wish Denzel hadn't attempted a British accent. :rollno:

With the mighty Joe Osborn on bass. I think he did most, or all, of the Carpenter's recordings. Tight, smooth, great tone.
I'd heard Karen played bass on some recordings. Such a talent with a beautiful voice.

I like this version of "Close to You". From a cool (IMO) movie called "Mirrormask" (2005). For folk that may like surreal fantasy, might be worth checking out.

Is Denzel speaking with a British accent? I only watched the video with low volume.

In Napoleon, which was okay, Ridley Scott decided it was okay for Joaquim to sound fully American while playing Napoleon. Basically every other character, French or Russian or from wherever in Europe had British accents. It took me right out of it. I get that you want big name stars in your movie, but it always takes me right out of the movie if it's a story from History.

There's a movie called Operation Finale with Oscar Isaac where he's the leader of a group of Israelis hunting Nazis in Argentina, and he sounds like Oscar Isaac in it. They also had Israeli actors speaking English with Israeli accents. The masses want big name actors and they don't want to read subtitles. I get it, but it's annoying.

Which is interesting because in the first Gladiator, Joaquin spoke with a (passable) British accent. Denzel is trying but failing in that department.
He just sounded like himself to me. It didn't sound like he was attempting any accent. It will be interesting to see his performance in the entire movie for better context.

"The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms." I still love stop-motion monsters.

The one-sentence summary: "Revived by a North Pole atomic blast, a submerged dinosaur swims to New York and goes to Coney Island." It makes it sound like he went there on vacation or something! 😂
Best hope he don't run into The Warriors.

We've started Battlestar Galactica. I never watch any of the 2004 series when it came out. The original 70's series was so bad it made me totaly averse to the newer one. We just watched te pilot miniseries so far and it's pretty dark - love it.

You’re in for a great ride with perhaps the strongest sci-fi series ever. We remain committed fans. The first episode of the series proper, “33”, is one of those single great shows in my memory. (BTW, Our daughter Kara (born 2008) got her name via Kara Thrace—“Starbuck”—in the series. In the original Norse, Kara apparently means a fierce woman, appropriate to Starbuck. In the Irish language it means friend or beloved. Both suit our daughter.) Enjoy!

I can’t over-recommend “Slow Horses” on Apple TV+. Three seasons so far and apparently up to 7 in process. Gripping MI5 spy fare, while also deeply funny, with some *great* characters—especially Gary Oldman’s shambling, smelly, and brilliant Jackson Lamb, and Jack Lowden’s continually beaten-up River Cartwright. We’ve watched each season at least twice and they’re even more fun the second time around!
