What's all the hate for Pete Wentz?

Many many years ago I was in a club at a spring break. There was a band on stage with a guitar playing lead singer guy who looked like god, played like god, and sounded like god. I turned to my friend and said, "I hate that guy!" He turned back to me and said, "You don't hate that guy, Joe. You hate yourself."

Robert Trujillo is a very good bass player. Sting is no slouch, either.
If Pete Wentz gets the job done, guess what: he's a good bass player.

I love when people think there's a scorecard involved in popular music and musicianship.

How many years have we all had to endure nitwits commenting on what a "bad" drummer Ringo is, yet nobody can name a single Beatles song with bad drumming on it?

I guess he's the primary lyricist, backing vocals, and bass player for Fallout boy. I don't like Fallout Boy but whatever, there's plenty of people who don't like the music I like.

Sometimes you need a generalist in your band. Some music doesn't need flashy bass parts. No hate for the guy here. I haven't really seen anyone say anything bad about him around TB.

His signature model is a Squier if that makes any jealous types feel better.

i mean don't get me wrong he's not the most technically proficient bass player in the world, but I can think of players FAR worse than him (for example: Sid Viscious and I've heard Robert Trujillo is pretty bad too). The man has an awesome stage presence and personality! Not to mention he really knows how to write songs lyrics!

I have never heard anyone call Robert Trujillo a bad bassist, perhaps you got him confused with Jason Newsted and the hate there which of course came mainly from James and Lars.

Me neither, but that's not unusual. Hell, I thought the guy with the long white beard who was seen at the recent NAAM show was a reality TV star who sells duck calls.

Seriously? The most recorded bassist in the history of the world?

I think he's the one with that Squier signature sparkly mustang.

That's Mikey Way, of My Chemical Romance, another band and player who are lightening rods for criticism.

That's the guy from my chemical romance, I think pete wence has his own Squier p bass.

Edit: as seen in the post above mine

Just figured I would add the name.

Both bands are labeled "pop punk" here (and elsewhere I assume) and that automatically seems to attract scorn. Add to the fact that yes - they play really simple stuff yet are/were HUGE success and forget about it, people here are going to rip on them (and Adam Clayton, et. al.).

It's just the way it is here.

That said - I remember Wentz stating in an interview somewhere quite some time ago, in reference to ducking out of the limelight for a while, that he thought "the world had had enough Pete Wentz" for a while. This seemed to imply behavior of some sort that he wasn't too proud of.

I'll go on record as saying I am a big fan of MCR, indifferent to FOB. But in both cases, I literally have never really noticed the bass playing.

Who cares?

The truth is most of us only know the tip of the iceberg about Pete. I have never met him or seen him perform.

Why are so many people, particularly musicians, so enthralled with comparison? It's petty and reeks of envy and jealousy.

I like Joe's story. If you find yourself hating a stranger you might want to check yourself. Instead of hating on Pete, what can you learn from him? He's obviously a pop music marketing genius who can sell more albums in 5 minutes than I have my entire career.
