Speaking as a fellow "maker-head", I'd love it if your build thread got the odd race car update too. I can't imagine many of our co-builders here being too annoyed by that.

I will consider it. I always feel bad for derailing threads, especially after a few of my posts led the Thunderbird Club thread to be banned for two weeks a while back. I just stopped posting there after that, didn't want to be the cause of that again.Speaking as a fellow "maker-head", I'd love it if your build thread got the odd race car update too. Being a guy who doesn't actually "bass" on a regular basis and I never gig nor am I in a band, I tend to be all over the place with my hobbies and often times my posts. But uh, yeah, I'll consider it.
I honestly find it fascinating that anyone would want to tune into my life in any fashion, that includes my woodturning Youtube channel which is up to 60 subs (am I famous yet? ). Why 60 people would find me interesting is amazing and humbling.
People with ADD, way too many hobbies and trouble staying on topic..... Hmmm, yeah,.. no, I can't think of anyone like that

I have trouble containing myself even within the "one" hobby of instrument building. It's probably a good thing I've migrated away from playing with cars and motorcycles and RC airplanes and fly fishing. I need to build musical stuff to get it out of my head, it's like a sickness. I have two mental basses and a mental guitar in progress in my head. And three or four completely different pickup designs each for both bass and guitar, and a new thing I want to try on a uke, and I want to build another tenor guitar, and I just bought that burl even though I have no real plan for it, and cook hardwoods keeps sending me emails about awesome wood, and I just bought some bar stock to try making my own bass bridge, and I have an Arrow order on the way with parts for two new bass preamp designs just in case I want to try a new preamp in a future build. My friend IM'd me over the weekend and asked if I wanted to build a chapman stick, and now I can't stop watching videos of Tony Levin...
Someday, when I manage to get everything settled down and meds dialed in (adderall?), I'd like to get it down to one real hobby.
I thought it would be furniture and a carving now and then but now that I've taken a stab at doing a bass, I think this might be more satisfying.

There is something special about spending time crafting something, and when it's finished, you can pick it up and rock/jazz/country/funk out!!
I don’t know of another hobby that includes really high end woodworking, finishing, electronics, and in some cases metal work, that also results in being playable. I like furniture building, but haven’t found the urge since I started building basses.

Actually the framework for a 1928 Durant M4 Sedan. Everything gets covered in steel.

I remember back in metal shop class in college that my favorite projects were the project where we made tools instead of actual finished things. I see instrument making as the same thing - you're making a tool that's then used to create things. It's really satisfying.
My new hobby for the last month has been running conduit, wire, handy boxes and basically a lot of copper.

Built a buffer all in at 300.00
4 x 10" buffs motor 1/3 hp @1725 RPM. Wheel speed is @1100 3step pulley in the arbor. Cast iron adjustable sheave at the motor. Motor on a hinged plate, gravity for belt tension.
Will stall and loosen the belt automatically if drag is too much on the buff, or if an edge gets caught.
The wheels stall rather than throw the workpiece to the ground.

So I left work a bit early yesterday to drive 2 hours across the state to help a fellow racer remove his engine from his racecar, which he then sent home with me to put in my racecar to replace the blown engine from Saturday. He will put his "big engine" back in his car and continue on with his season, no skin off his back at all, he was planning to do that swap next month, this just accelerated his timeline. I'm lucky to have friends like that. It's just a loaner and goes back at the end of the season, but the dream is still alive!

We got some work to do! But we got 12 days before our next race. Last night was a late one, got back home about 11pm, back at work this morning with the engine still in the bed of my truck. I'll head straight to the shop after work to unload it and then we get to work.
I have a serious affinity for building things. I love driving the car, it's fun to race at high speeds (in a safe manner on a controlled circuit), but man I love building things. Racecars, guitars, furniture, woodturning, cooking, I just love making things. I gave my friend's wife a Christmas ornament that I turned on my lathe and presented them with one of my (increasingly) infamous cheesecakes as a way to say thank you. Mamma taught me not to show up emptyhanded.
Anyways, where was I going with all this? And why don't we have a squirrel emoji yet? This place is the greatest forum I've ever found!

I made a pen last night, the ADD ensues.
So, this is my first pen. Pen turning is kind of a right of passage for woodturners and I had been sort of avoiding it for some reason, mostly because pens themselves seem so "thing of the past". What do you do with them once you make them? Do people even buy pens anymore?
So here's the story on this one: For those who don't recall, I got all of my lathe equipment, turning tools included, from my wife's grandpa who passed away a few years back. His stuff also included several pen kits, still sealed in the package and a bunch of pen blanks. Basically, he had a lot of supplies that he hadn't used up yet, and I took possession of all of that stuff. So this pen was literally his stuff. I went very basic on this one so that I could just learn the process. It's flame maple sanded up to 400 grit, then a micro-polishing compound and then finished in Odie's Oil. I didn't fuss with the finishing on this one very much so it's probably not gonna stand up to the test of time, but as a first pen it's not horrible. I learned a lot, lol.
Now, I need to get geared up for this "YouTube Cross Channel Challenge" I agreed to take part in. This month's challenge is looming and I'm running out of time! Oh yeah, I also set this engine next to the racecar last night, that needs to happen soon too.....
