What's On Your Workbench?

You see, ever since I started building instruments, I've been afraid to build my own neck…. …I'm forcing my hand. I WILL build my own bass neck. It'll be a while before I actually get around to this build, but there's no going back now. And if I succeed, and that neck actually works, then I may feel justified in calling myself an "amateur instrument builder". Until such time, I'm "someone with a workshop".
That’s great! I’m right there with you; Years and years of complicated repairs, fret work, parts builds…. I was fearless about all of it but I’m petrified of building a neck. Slowly, I’ve been gathering supplies like you and I’ll eventually pull the trigger. It needs to happen.

And hey, don’t knock being a guy with a workshop. That’s still more than 90% of people are doing!

Here is a recent custom order for a guitar strap with rattlesnake inlay and lined with suede.

That strap looks really nice, TexasThunder! I appreciate the thoughtful photography as well.

So I decided to take a note from @Freekmagnet and think a bit more about branding. Not that I really care that much, but I actually have people asking me to build custom guitars now so this thing I started just to build myself a bass has become something. And as Jeremy has proven, thinking through all of that might not be a bad idea. I know a lot of you have some really cool names that you build under, but I felt like "Bad Apple Guitarwerx" wasn't cutting it.
Sooooo....... I've decided to rebrand my "company" (that doesn't exist) as "Voyeur Guitars". I even did a Google search and didn't find that name already taken! :woot: And what better to use for a logo than a peeping eye in a key hole -
Voyeur Logo.gif
I also feel like this logo will open up some custom inlay options that aren't terribly difficult as well.
And I plan on naming various models things like:
"Hooker" Telecaster style
"Stripper" - Strat style
"Pole Dancer" - My custom body design
"Girl Next Door" - Standard P Bass
...and so on (as I come up with more).

So I think the "what's on your workbench" will be some graphic design and rebranding of my YT channel, my FB page, etc.
But I'm a lot happier with that. I mean, who doesn't want a "Voyeur, Girl Next Door"? :smug:

Hey Tim, I am at work at the moment so I've got my "business owner brain" engaged...

Are you not concerned about alienating a segment of your possible customer base or YT viewers? I don't object to the theme, but some might...

I kinda like Bad Apple Guitarwerx, but Voyeur ain't bad. I agree that you could do some cool inlay stuff with the keyhole logo.

"Voyeur" could lend itself to some really cool type treatments. The most stupidly obvious thing that comes to my mind would be to incorporate the circular keyhole logo by using it as the "O" in "VOYUER."

I let the T-bird out of the stockade.

The great news is that I slowly released the clamps and the truss rod held just fine. In fact, I was able to push a much bigger back bow into the neck and snug the rod to it and it worked exactly as it should. Thanks, Stu-Mac! That tool paid for itself!

The other great news is that the heat treatment (this was the fourth or fifth…. I’ve lost track) was the most effective yet. It removed most of the remaining forward bow and a fair amount of the twist. The remaining bow and twist is small enough that I’ll be able to take it out of fingerboard and fret dressing.

Heat setting a neck is such an imprecise thing. I don’t like to use a lot of heat, preferring to use a plain ol’ drug store heating pad but for a longer time. I feel like I have better control that way and I’m less likely to compromise the joint between the fingerboard and the neck. This is a very slim, mahogany neck so it’s pretty rubbery already. I don’t want to take unnecessary risks. Each time I heated it I clamped just a little more back bow into it and this time, between the back bow and the counter-twist, I had it cranked pretty far. I suppose I could gain a little more from one more session but I think I’ve hit the point of diminishing returns here. Further heating just adds further risk.

The owner tells me that the paint job was “chemically inspired” sometime in the 1980s. High art, so to speak.

Still miles to go on this project but I’m glad this part is done.

Not guitar related, but....
The new truck needed a little character, so I put some vinyl on the tailgate. -

I do own a vinyl cutter, and probably could have done this on it. But it was just as easy to cut it all by hand. Those drafting skills came in handy when I hand drew and cut out that star. ;)
And for those wondering why it's not in color;
The short answer is, I didn't have any blue vinyl. I only had white and red. But I did have two shades of grey and I kind of dig the greyscale effect on the silver truck. It's a little more subtle while still being rather bold at the same time.
The advantages of having vinyl laying around from the race car.

Nothing on my workbench at the moment. But I did spend all day Saturday driving about 4 hours from home and then 4 hours back home to buy new truck. Well, not "new", but new to me anyways.

Same. My whole life is on the workbench at the moment. Everything but a bass.
I've had 2 Toyota Tundras before the van. A green short bed crew cab and then a black ext cab 8' bed. The 8' bed version was my favorite vehicle of all time. I traded the longbed in for the van, with the intention of getting another roadtrip or 2 out of it, then finishing the camper conversion and selling it when it was paid off and getting back into a truck. The van was totaled in a pile-up on the way to work a few weeks ago, so I was thrust into the new car buying circus ahead of schedule (I bought the van in late 2019, before everything went crazy). They stopped making the 8' bed in 2021. Not only is it hard to find (it was a little rare to begin with), but the used car market is nuts right now. Stuff doesn't sit on the lots long and the prices are crazy. After missing out on several because I hesitated for a day, I jumped on one I found in Virginia. I'm gonna pay through the nose for it, but it has just under 4k miles on the odometer and has a few small features that the 2014 didn't have (factory trailer brake controller, nicer radio). I'm flying there Tues and driving it home. It'll be the first 2WD Tundra I've owned, but I hardly ever used 4WD, so I'm hoping I see some relief in fuel economy.
That's just vehicle stuff. Don't get me started on everything else.

Ugh, sorry to hear about the wreck man. I tell people all the time "It's not my driving I worry about, it's all those yahoos you have no control over." :meh:

Yeah man, the used car market is nuts. I was specifically looking for a Dodge Ram diesel with a manual transmission, a unicorn in it's own right. So when this one popped up I had to pounce. My wife wanted me to wait about another 6 months, but these only come along once in a while. We're a bit stretched on our outgoing funding right now, but we'll make it by. It wasn't the best idea I've ever had, but certainly not the worst either. She did say "Your hobbies are gonna have to use stuff you already have for a while..." Meaning: "We're not buying any fancy wood for a while".

Congrats on the new truck!

Nice! It says “Tim is a Texan!”, but in that PNW “it’s always grey here” way. :roflmao:
