What's On Your Workbench?

I wasn’t expecting to have any free time today but then I did so I took advantage of it and spent some time in the shop.

Coats #10 & 11 went onto the P bass. I think I’ll be able to stop at 12 and start wet sanding so I feel like I’m actually nearing the finish line (so to speak) on that part of the project.

Meanwhile, I started fitting a custom piece to fill the gap above the truss rod anchor:

There wasn’t anything in that gap originally but @Bruce Johnson mentioned filling it and then I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I also had some time while I was waiting for finish to dry and decided to take a chisel out of the pile of flea market and yard sale finds and clean it up:

It’s a nice, old Witherby socket chisel that I ground to a fairly shallow angle to use as a paring chisel. I had some donor handles in a drawer and this one was a perfect fit so I sanded the dirt and crud off of it and gave it a few coats of wipe-on poly. This chisel will now join the workforce.

Up to 13 coats now:

I’m going to stop at 15. Coats 12-14 are just getting scuffed back with steel wool instead of being fully level-sanded and that should allow a nice buildup by the time I reach 15 so I can level-sand and start the process of wet-sanding.

I’ll get coat 14 on later today before the thanksgiving festivities and 15 on Saturday morning. Then I’ll allow several days of cure time before I begin the sanding odyssey.

Meanwhile, I’m re-thinking the way I made this little filler piece for the neck:

I think I’m going to start it over with a different, better plan.

Liking it not because I think you should start over but I am interested in a new plan on a repair.

Edit: edited. Wow apparently I didn’t proofread before posting.

My repair plan hasn’t changed, actually. What’s changed is how I plan to fabricate the little filler piece.
But…. after looking at it more closely, I may be able to use the piece I already made with only minor brutality (in the form of a razor saw and chisel). If I cut the filler piece I made into two pieces (razor saw) and trim those pieces to fit (chisel), one over the TR anchor and the other over the walnut plug*, it may be easier than trying to make one piece work in both places. If I can dry-fit the parts and they seem snug I’ll go with it. If not I’ll start over.

*The anchor and the plug line up together where they meet but they’re not perfectly coaxial. The plug is parallel to the fingerboard but the anchor is on a slight angle. I’m using a 3/8” bore in a piece of endgrain and then cutting a radial slice of that to make the filler piece. By cutting it into two pieces, the angle discrepancy should be less problematic.
