Double Bass What's this?

I opened my bass case yesterday to play and this was in the bottom of it.

Fell out of the F-Hole I guess. The bass is a 130 (or more) year old French instrument.

Best guess I can make, based on the second pic, is part of three segments of kerf attached to a bit of inner rib.

Not joking, has someone been too close to the firewood and this is a piece of pine bark? Or some other tree bark. I cannot think of any bass timber that it could be.

Operative words "I guess". I'm with David. I bet you picked that up in your driveway, or when you stood your bass (in the case) on it's endpin in the grass while talking to someone or pulling your keys out of your pocket?

Has it been rattling inside, if so for how long?

Some of the pictured structures do look like kerfing but it looks like it's cemented into some other material, almost like something was trying to make a nest.

Can you examine the inside of the body to see if any kerfing is missing along the top or back tables? Might want a mirror and flashlight or an endoscope to do this.

If kerfing is missing inside you might also examine your seams with a flashlight in a darkened room.

Could also do some forensic dissection of the foreign body to see what it really is.

Of course a good DB luthier could do a great job of all this.

You could very well be right.

I play under a tree in a park on Wednesdays with friends and a piece of bark could have fallen unobserved into my soft case. I hope that's the answer.

given that was in the case and not actually found in the bass, id guess it is just bark that snuck in yr case somehow.
