What's wrong with schecter basses??

I am pretty sure Robert DeLeo uses a few import Model Ts and their jazz style bass. Have seen videos of him with basses that have the diamond series logo on them. DeLeo is an amazing bassist and known for having great tone so that right there says a lot about the quality of what some say are "cheaper" basses. Too many people base if a bass is good or not off the price tag and that in my opinion is total BS.
I love my Schecter Model T.
The only bass I have that beats it is my 1988 Fender (Japan) Precision Lyte.
I do agree with some of the other posters that Schecter has some "take it or leave it" looks on many of their guitars and basses. I'm pretty much a traditionalist when it comes to looks, but on occasion I do like some non traditional ones.

I see nothing at all wrong with Schecter basses. Some are more desirable than others, just like any other brand. I had a C-4 XXX for Several years and I really liked that bass a LOT. I had a chance to trade it for a Martin acoustic/electric guitar and I just couldn't pass that deal up.
With my current lineup of basses, I need for nothing. But if I someday stumble upon a Model T with a maple neck for a fair price, it will likely join my bass harem. I like the Session Stilettos and Barons a lot as well.
I think they are good instruments in their price range for sure.

Don't hate them but haven't given them much thought either. If i was going to buy a bass for under a grand id probably go esp. They both make cheap beginner basses as well as some nice basses so there's a reason they get a bad rep. But yeah just play a few. You can get a neck through esp ltd like the f-415, b-405, b-415 b-1005 and so on with the same EMG pickups that come in some $2000 Spector euro models. Every schector I've ever tried had the emg hz pickups which Are ok i guess, but nothing to be go crazy for.
Pickups and hardware are easy to replace. A lot of the time when I am looking at basses I never really plug in unless it is something that I plan on buying. First and foremost I always go off how it feels and the quality of the neck and body. Electric instruments that feel and sound good acoustically are key to buying a bass for me. If an electric instrument does not sound or feel good unplugged it more than likely won't sound good plugged in.
Many of the Schecter basses I have picked up have good construction, fretwork and solid setups. Many come with some pretty good mid level hardware too.

I had a Stiletto Studio 5. I hated it.
Tone was VERY 'blah' - huge spike in the midrange, not enough low end for my liking.
HORRIBLE neck dive.
Lower horn was very uncomfortable (digs into your thigh when sitting).
Shielding issues with the pickups (bad RF hum).
Stock tuners blew, 1 by 1 (I eventually got frustrated and dropped $200 on a nice set of Hipshots).
Overall, a pretty heavy instrument. Gigging with it was a pain at times.
I sold it for less than half of what I paid and never looked back.

My mileage certainly did vary - I've got an Elite 5 which is basically the Studio with 2-band EQ instead of 3-band. I don't play sitting down much, so I can't comment on the lower horn, but mine certainly doesn't have significant neck dive, doesn't hum, has a pretty nice "modern" tone (I *did* think the Elite's tone was better than the Studio, despite having a "lower end" pre, but it wasn't dramatic), and while it's heavier than my Status Graphite, for sure, it's also lighter than my Jazz 5. Which brings me to my question: What year was yours made? I got mine in early 2008, so it was probably built in 2007. Your experience is so different from mine that I gotta wonder if the design/materials got a whole lot better or a whole lot worse in between.

I had looked at a PJ version at a guitar center a few years back and I thought it sounded very nice. I was a bit put off by the weight but that's a whole different topic.

I had a stiletto custom 5 that was the lightest bass I have owned with no dive. I traded it in on a new amp after I got my Am STD P V but had I not gotten this new bass I would still be playing the stiletto. I did notice that it had a very hot B string and I did run a compressor to even things out. Other than that I loved my Schecter.

I just saw The Dickies live a few night's ago. Both their bassist and rhythm guitar were Schechters ... and they sounded great. I really like some of their body styles a lot too. I tinkered with one or two at a GC for a few minutes, and they played just fine to my hands.
Shows pretty variable quality, then, which probably explains a lot of the weak resale value. Mind you, when I bought my Elite, I had played every damned 5-string on the wall at a mid-sized GC and found it to be really exceptional at the price, not as pretty as the one Studio 5 they had but playing and sounding a bit better. Were you not in a situation to try before buying?
I owned a schecter as my first 5 string. It sounded fine but it was uncomfortable to play and it had some extreme neck dive so I sold it. I don't think I would ever buy another to be honest.
played a schecter stiletto custom (6 point bolt on, emg hz, cant remember the exact model) and from memory it sounded really good. Nice low end punch and good "pingy" sort of slap thing going on.
and for a six string the neck was really nice. chunky without being awkward to hold. if they were sold for a better price here in aus i would probably get one for myself.

i got the first version hellcat vi with the rosewood board a few years ago. had the squier bass vi been available i might've bought that instead but i think the the schecter has better fit and finish and sounds better as well. i also prefer the satin finish on the schecter neck to the high gloss finish of the squier neck. weight-wise my hellcat is heavier than expected and my 004 is lighter than expected.
