When I first got an upright, our BL asked me if I had a name for it during a gig. I always believed that names for instruments were a little silly, and only BB came up with a good one. So when he asked me that, I blurted out the first obnoxious name I could think of that would discourage him from making it a regular thing…Li’l Elvis, which was Elvis’ nickname for his you know what.
He did it anyway. For years I would have people come up to me and say, “Hey Jimmy, where’s Li’l Elvis?” on gigs where I didn’t bring it.
Eventually I recognized its genius when these gals were talking to me and mentioned it, and I told them the origin story, and one of them says, “We know the story and we like it!” and gave me a look. Would have been awesome had I not been married and she wasn’t 30 years older than me
