I went to college for electrical engineering and somehow wound up turning wrenches for a living. One advantage I have is my understanding of electrical theory, which so many guys lack and it's something you really need to work on today's cars.
How did you go from clerk to tech?? That's got to be a cool job.
I've got a few friends that work or worked at the USPS for quite some time..... one guy is a clerk, has been there for 30+ and the other was a mechanic, fixing the Jeeps. He did his 30 years and retired about 20 years ago.
I considered applying for a mechanic job there until my retired friend talked me out of it.

Carpenter. Currently coverting a 150 year Edinburgh golf club house into workshop/day care centre with overnight accomodation for disabled kids 
. This merging of residential/commercial means a huge overlap of rules and regs.
The kids are stuck in a large wooden shed ATM so it'll be nice when this gets completed by June.

I'm not a vet. I've never gotten the impression that you can't or won't be given a job if you're not a veteran.
What they will do, though, is include your active duty time (I'm not sure if it's all or partial) to your work time as far as reaching retirement goes.
There may be other benefits for vets, too, but non-vets are just as likely to work here.
I've only been with them for one year, so maybe long-timers have a different take on it. Maybe it was different twenty years ago.
If you can get your hands on a Sharp LL-S201, do so. They're a perfect setup for a lectern, and around $700. Only problem is that Sharp put them on production hiatus until 3rd quarter this year to concentrate on larger Aquos models. We REALLY like that monitor and my fingers are crossed that they'll re-start production.

Long story. I should have applied for maintenance from the start. Spent 20+ years trying to switch over thanks to management. Finally got to do the switch 2 years ago. The powers-that-be(were) in maintenance thought I should be a custodian first. Didn't consider my military training or the previous job (appliance repair) a good enough reason to allow the transfer. Go figure...

Wow, that's nuts. I hear stories like that all the time.
I'm not. They do employ a lot of vets as they get 5 or 10 pt preference on the tests you have to take. I just did extremely well on the tests.
I'm a communications consultant for a huge investment company in the Philly area. We do 401(k) plans for other companies - I handle communications that go to participants in the plans - like save more, or diversify, etc.
I also have a photography business on the side - I do @ 15 weddings a year. I'm eligible to retire from here in 2 years- hopefully I'll be able to do photography full time. I want to expand it into a digital media company - photo/video/live sound/lighting/recording. We'll see.
