Don’t need no stinking day job but I’m busier than when I had one. Why else would I be up at 6am on Sunday?
I work as a machinist for a company that makes large scale thermoformers, mostly for packaging (clamshells, blister), but also medical devices. We have a tooling department, but our customers often have third parties or in-house departments make tooling. I don't have those chops, I make transmission parts or pre-weld out of steel. I move a lot of my parts with a crane. Our standard machines are 40-50' long.
I have had many other various jobs- custom cabinets (fabrication), retail, etc.
I took an early retirement in 2010. Then, two years ago, I was called back for some very specialized work designing and manufacturing the visual systems for extremely complex military and civil flight simulators. Now, I am suppose to be semi-retired but it is not unusual for me to put in over 40 hours in a workweek. The good news is I can do a lot of it from my home office.

Let's be honest. The majority of us in here are hobbyists, at best. Even the gigging musicians often have day jobs to pay the bills.

I was a park ranger for 18 years until economic repercussions from COVID-19 (my family has managed to avoid the disease itself thus far) took the kids out of school, all of us out of state, and me out of the paid workforce. When my kids can safely return to (pre)school, I might see about going back to it, but I might stick to ranging riffs.
