Of the amps I've owned, I like the Mesa Rocket 440 the best. Nice clean, tremolo + reverb, gets all the gain I could ask for - just shy of that buzzy, boomy, soulless sound that was popularized by the Nu-Metal kids. 4X10 combo, it's almost as much fun as a bass amp to move. Doesn't have a ton of low end, but that's what bass is for; my guitarist buddy couldn't overpower it with a 400+ running 4X12, 6X10, and 2X15 speakers. He really tried too, but the mids and highs of this thing just cut right through. 2nd would be Fender Champ; it's real nice, but it doesn't really rock.

I've heard an Orange Rockerverb sound impressive in a store, and back when I had my 30" scale baritone guitar (tuned A-A) it was brutal through an Uberschall if you like that Nu-Metal sound.

My own amp- Fender Ultra Chorus (2*12), solid state. It's one of Fender's comparatively few amps with a true chorus -ie- the chorus occurs "between" the two speakers rather than a chorus effect "on" two speakers, as it would with an amp with just one speaker. If you know what I'm saying here...

It doesn't have the tube distortion tone or headroom, but has clean tone and chorus sound I prefer to any other. And besides that's what the soundguy is there for- to mic things!

Fender Champ doesn't rock?

Perhaps not in the metal sense. But as a classic rock or blues amp with a Strat or Tele they sure do! I run a Strat straight in to a heavily tweaked 50's Champ. No pedals. Fat blues tone to kill for for. Expressive as all get out.

I love mine, nice power amp distortion at a volume that matches nicely to a natural drum kit. If you need more juice, bring the SM57! I'm a big fan of low power class A finals.
