Where were you when Jaco died?

I know you mentioned some sort of irony thing, and I didn't get it. Comparing King Diamond [99.99999% don't like] to Weather Report and Jaco isn't valid, even when doing schtick.

I know you didn't dude and I'm sorry about that. I thought you were playing along. The point was simply that because a person likes something that is not readily digestible by the majority of the public, be it Jaco, king diamond or Barney the dinosaur , it doesn't mean you have superior powers of understanding or that everyone else is inferior. Maybe 99% of people don't like king diamond because it is obscure and harsh sounding- not because they are stupid. Same with jaco .do you get it now?

Is it just me or is what's going on sort of this?
A: I don't like spinach!
B: But you have to like spinach! We all like spinach!
A: I don't care! I don't like spinach! Nothing you can say will make me like spinach! So there.....
B: Why don't you like spinach?
A: Quit pestering me! I don't like spinach, you spinach fanboy!
What this has to do with the OP's question I have no idea. I do however think this is a proper Metal band:
YouTube - Motörhead - Ace Of Spades ?
I'm not sure if Lemmy likes spinach, but I do like him better than Hal Patino. I have no idea of what any of this has to do with the OP's question.

This is the most coherent post on this thread. I do lime Lemmy, more than spinach, but less than Hal Patino. So how about if I offer you half of my spinach and a Lemmy and you give me your Hal Patino?

And I like Lemmy better than Hal Patino (for reasons that belong in another thread for another time) so you can have my Hal Patino and I'll take your half of the spinach and exchange it for chard which I like better anyway.....

Jaco is a hit with bass players and Weather Report's "Birdland" was a hit with the public. WR and Jaco were very influential, while that other band is a joke. That's why I did not get the joke.

I was riding on a tour bus finishing up a tour with John (Dukes of Hazzard) Schneider. We had just finished a show with Marie Osmond and it was the last leg of the tour I had started in May opening for Alabama when they were at their absolute peak. I had called Don Coffman a couple of days ago because I'd heard he was in the hospital from a mutual friend and was debating on whether to come down to Florida. Don called me the morning after he died with the news. Still a sad memory after 24 years.....

Getting back to the OP's question and my original response. Jaco was a big influence on how I thought about Music and how I function as a Bassist in it. He was also someone that I knew personally and liked a great deal. Jaco before the Bipolar Disorder and Drugs took him down was a genuinely brilliant human being. Because of him, I think about Music in a different way. It was a terrible, terrible loss to me on a lot of levels. That's why I can remember exactly what I was doing when I got the news, in much the same way I remember when John Lennon was shot.

As a bass player his influence on me has been minimal but when I hear a train whistle at nigh off in the distance I think about him hearing a train whistle at night off in the distance and saying, "Now that's music." That changed how I listened to the world around me and where I heard music.

And also, how many no-name "jokes" do you see get invited onstage with arguably the biggest name of the genre, to play covers of HIS songs at THEIR concert. :eyebrow:

YouTube - ‪Metallica - Mercyful Fate (Live W/ King Diamond)‬‏

Don't bash that which you don't understand, King Diamond played an integral role in what we call metal now-a-days, so obviously SOMEONE was/is listening!

And though I won't resort to bashing Jaco, I consider him the same way I see bands like Rush and Primus, they just don't do it for me, and just seem boring to my ears. But that doesn't mean I don't respect him and what he did for the instrument that I love.

CHEERS TO JACO PASTORIUS!
AND ALL HAIL THE KING OF THE EVIL FALSETTO FROM FROM HELL, KING DIAMOND!!

You have no idea how satisfying it is to see this become a discussion about King Diamond! Best wishes to King for a speedy recovery from his recent bypass surgery.

It's absolutely true that in the light of this sort of stuff, personal opinion means nothing. The greatness of real art is in no way devalued in the slightest by any one person's dislike of it. It's just too far above that. I daresay that a few people weren't keen on Michelangelo's painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. So what? It's still a stunning achievement and Jaco's bass playing was a stunning achievement. Your opinion of it doesn't change that fact one iota.

It also sounds like you need to separate Jaco's mental health issues from his musical work. The former do nothing to diminish the contribution he made with the latter and comments about these are completely irrelevant when discussing his music.

in order for an artist to be "respected" I want to respect the Artist first, then the art............I'd say that Mike Watt is WAY higher in my book than Jaco for that very reason...........I don't have to separate anything and this is the exact problem I keep trying to point out...........I don't, nor will I ever say YOU should or shouldn't respect or elevate anyone or their art..........it is TOTALLY Subjective and does not pertain to me as a human being or player to tell me I should like or respect anything any player has done..........You cannot say that any one artist is responsible for being a major influence because you cannot know if there wasn't another person in the wings about to do the same thing............people would Argue that Nirvana changed music in the 90's, I would say there were 1000's of bands doing the same thing that would have most likely replaced Nirvana had they not been in the right place/right time. Now would I be right?? who knows................I just like to play and listen to music! I am sad a human being died, I am glad folks were touched by his art........I dislike it VERY much.............

I am sorry...I am a HUGE KD fan and if you think Hal Patino is better than Jaco, you have lost your mind!! Let me say that I dislike Jaco's style, but understand his importance to the instrument. Opinion is one thing, but in no way is Hal Patino in the same league as a musician as Jaco. That is just fact, it's no longer opinion when you speak about technical prowess on an instrument, regardless of who you "like" better. Steve DiGorgio is better than both of them, though...

:hiding:

...and he plays metal!!!
