Where were you when Jaco died?

And the borrowed bass, he doesn't look in bad shape there tbh, but I think that pic says a little with that jester in it. Can buy as a large print online apparently.

I couldn't buy any Jaco memorabilia from his declining days. It's just too depressing, even though he looked good at times.

I remember buying the Jaco [w/Jerry Jemmott interviewing] bass course [w/VHS tape haha] and boy was I disappointed. He was kinda out of it and he wasn't playing his fretless. I still learned a ton, but I was bummed.

And here it is:

The rest should be there as well.

You guys that aren't familiar should check out those vids, while remembering Jaco was 10X better in his prime.

It's amazing that even when he sucked, he was better than 95% of bass guitarists.

It has it's moments but you can tell Jaco is a bit nervy about it, it's been a while but I watched the Scofield jam a few day's back. He did more than enough to change things for a lot of players, like Parker, Coltrane, he's in the same book imo.

\ But there exists a contingent of smug , rude people who think that because they have developed a taste for something that is unpalatable to 99 percent of the rest of the world, that they are somehow superior and everyone else is a barbarian.

I actually agree with this. A friend of mine is a BRILLIANT alto sax player. Highly educated and highly skilled. I love nothing more than hearing him wail out a pentatonic or blues scale solo. He rips.

On the other hand, when he plays jazz and I don't like it, there is a certain "oh you don't get it" . So what? To me, jazz is unlistenable. I love swing, and Satin Doll may well be my fav songs to play with the stageband, but I just do not get jazz, just like some don't get metal (I don't like metal).

Jamerson and Rocco play(ed) the sort of stuff that makes me go "wow". A 13/8 Dorian C# solo makes me turn the cd player off.

This is a case of horses for courses. Being that musical taste is unique to every person, you (mod or not) can't expect any bassist to appreciate Jaco if they never heard him play anything that was pleasing to their ears.

You still use a cd player?

And you don't like jazz???

Pfft.. what a neanderthal.. <smug laughter>

:D j/k

Edit: for the record, I only listen to jazz on vinyl, while drinking the finest chardonney and reading my first edition Dickens...

I hear ya, but "jazz" is rather wide-ranging. Is "Teen town" jazz?

Yeah, that's from the same record the OP described earlier. There is a guy that knows how to leave SPACE when blowing. Brilliant. [Jaco plays drums there too.]
