Which Cover Did You Learn Last And...

My buddy called me in a frenzy. Was doing a sub gig. They play Spirit of Radio. I figured out all the riffs in it for him

Last learned was My Little Suede Shoes (composed by John Coltrane).
Favorite to play is a tossup between Bluesette (composed by Toots Theilemans) and Out of Nowhere (composed by Johnny Green).
The hardest nut to crack, i.e. not to play but to get a feel for, is It’s Almost Like Being in Love (composed by Frederick Loewe) from the musical Brigadoon.

It looks like only 3 or 4 of us play something other than rock.

Not to hijack this thread, but we could start a discussion about songs with odd measures and how they get mangled sometimes in covers. Not the 5/4 or 7/4 songs, but the 4/4 songs with the occasional 2 or 3 beat measure. Bungalow Bill, Here Comes The Sun, I Threw It All Away, The Weight.

I'm again working on In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. It's very artsy, melodic, and a lot of jazzy moving parts. I love the song. If you're in a new band and not sure of their talent level, throw this one at them! BTW It usually throws off mediocre drummers.

The last cover I learned was "Whatcha Gonna Do" by Pablo Cruise. The ones I enjoy playing most are most songs from Melissa Etheridge and Journey.

I wanted to do 'like the way I do' from Melissa Etheridge, because I thought I remembered that it had a tight slap bassline. I remembered wrong, it's all done with a synth. Can't help to feel cheated

im working on paul simon's you can call me al but i cant work the reverse bass bit i played the back of my bass but i got no sound strange paul must have a magic bass

The cover band just learned Lonesome Rider by Volbeat. I like a walking bass line over minors. My current fav is Hysteria by Muse. It's a little more challenging than the Def Lepard version.

As a side question...how do you guys and gals learn soo many songs in such a short time? I have a heard enough time learning 5 or 6 over a couple of months. No family life is crazy so I don't get much me time, so I'm sure that doesn't help.

Yep. Dogs, kids, spouse...life.
Until a few years ago, I thought the same way. Here's what I did...
Keep the bass out (if you can) readily accessible. It can be free-range, no cable/amp etc.
Attempt to organize the chaos; sleep, work, kids, life. I found only about 15 minutes of "me time" at first in a 24 hr period.
Pick 2 or 3 songs for the month.
5 min warm-up, 5 minutes of listening/finding roots/changes, 5 minutes of playing.
With a bit of effort the time available grows; I found out how much time I was actually wasting in a day and eventually bundled it all together.
You can do it, keep your chin-up, and it falls into place.

It's 4/4 on the drums though it doesn't sound like it. Never played it, but know it well. The guitar and bass just go off on their own with no regard for time sig, but the drums are 4/4, so you just have to land in the right place together.

It can only improve from the original synth line! I will maybe still give that song a go, because I liked the tightness of it. The line and timing is really on top of the rhythm, almost mechanical.

The riff goes 2/4, 4/4, 4/4, 5/4. The longer version, leading into the chorus, starts with 2/4, then goes to 4/4 and stays. It's pretty quirky!

I think you're right. It's definitely a straight 4/4 for Bonzo but the second part of the riff is all over the place. Like you say, Jimmy said they just played it and hoped they came out of it together. Legend!
