Which Cover Did You Learn Last And...

Last cover I learned was Something by the Beatles. Still ironing out rough patches. What a PITA!

Favorite cover to play? Played it at a gig last night. I Don't Need No Doctor by Humble Pie. Rocking tune, relatively easy to play, and a bass solo section in the middle. What's not to like?

First song I ever "learned" was Inagaddadavida by Iron Butterfly. Took me months. My dad could still hum that bass line until the day he passed he heard it so many times.

Just polishing off "Save the Last Dance for Me" for a wedding in February at the couple's request. They also have asked for "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and "For Once In My Life", but they're already on our extended list.

My favourite? I'd go with "Sir Duke" - great song and the unison bridge is a blast. Of course, we play it in Bb rather than B to accommodate the horns.

Most recent was squeeze box, a song I don’t enjoy but the bass line is so basic and the bluesy 1/5/4 chord progression leaves a ton of space for fills and jamming out.

My favorite coincidentally is another who tune for the exact opposite reason, the bass line rocks and takes center stage - the real me. I have only done that one a couple times and will only do squeeze box once, I don’t actually do a ton of who tunes.

Last cover learned was "Boys Of Summer" by Don Henley for an acoustic trio we're just starting up. It's intended to be an originals band but we're throwing in some covers while we build our repertoire.

Favourite covers to play are:-
"Have You Ever Seen The Rain" by CCR
"Ziggy Stardust" where I do a mix of the Bowie and the Bauhaus versions
"The Time Warp" from Rocky Horror
"Place Your Hands" by Reef

Like most things, the more you do it the better at it you get.

You cannot learn a song if you don't know it. You have to listen to it until it is burned into your brain so you don't have to think what is coming next.

Split them into batches and listen to them on a loop and make a cheat sheet for each. Some I only need to listen to a couple of times and I have them down, others can take a lot longer.

I aim to get the correct flavour of the song not note for note, that can come later if needed (it rarely is).

Don't rely on looking the chords up on the net. The easy chords are usually right (but you should be able to work those out yourself anyway), it is on the more difficult parts where the they can get creative and are very often wrong.

We added the Stones "Miss You" about 6 weeks ago. I used to play it in the 80s, but I revamped the way I play it and it's a lot of fun to play and gets the folks dancing. We added Heart's Straight On a few months back, but have only played it once or twice since we lost our second guitarist, about 3 months ago and have been auditioning people. I do string pops at the end of the chorus. instead of working on new tunes, we have been wasting our time trying to get one guitarist up to speed, but we just cut him. He practiced with us but never played out with us.
