Who else does this to their cabs?

I hear ya. I used to cover the corporate logos on my stage amps and cabs back in my days of playing punk & indie, not because I was ashamed of the gear but out of principle.

I didn't wear shirts or pants with visible logos (didn't want to pay anyone for the privilege of being their walking advertisement, or to take personal pride in having paid money for something). Same deal with amps and cabs (in the 80s-early 90s, that was mostly Ampeg and Hartke, with some Peavey, Eden, and Carvin--perfectly useable gear -- some of it even fairly trendy at the time, so I wasn't covering it because it was cheap or pariah). Other people put art, heart, and sweat into designing and building the gear; and I respected that. But at the same time, (and probably because I've always been a gear hound, interested in trying out everything) I really wanted to police myself so that I wasn't simply chasing after "sexy" gear that was whispering come-ons of conferred status in my wee consumer's ear.

The relationship I wanted with my stage gear was for it to be tools of work, art, and revolution (what can I say, I was an idealistic kid). I didn't want to buy or use amps and cabs so they could somehow bathe me in their reflected glow as authorized rock status objects. Of course, nobody completely escapes this unless you build your own.

These days? More chill: I still don't wear logo clothes, but I don't bother debadging my stage rig.

The 4x10 on the bottom right is a Peavey cab that I removed the logo from about 15 years ago, because the downward spike of the "A" cracked off, and looked even worse than it normally does. I also got tired of having it snag on my shirt when I lifted it up, etc. The badge on the Avatar cab on top is a cheap flimsy piece of aluminum, that is already getting kinda bent and banged up, so I'll probably pull that off sometime soon too.

The Sunn 0))) logo is awesome though. How lame would it be to pick up a Fender Bassman 300 and replace the Fender logo with a Sunn plate off ebay? Because I've seriously considered doing that, since the Sunn 300T is no longer being made under that brand.

I used to use a Trace rig with a 2x10 and a 1x15. I took off the manufacturer's logos on the cabinets and replaced them with home made "Poser" logos as a goof because the guitarist in the all original band I was subbing in always called me a Poser. I just showed up to a gig with them on there w/o telling him. When he looked at my rig in the middle of a song he started laughing so hard he lost his place. Soooooo, I left them on for good measure.

Since then, I've downsized to a GK Backline 210 with the newer block style font in the logo. So, I've made a "Poser, Jr." logo in that font. Still gets a good laugh from anyone in the know... :D

I've often wondered why some folks cover the logos on stage for TV gigs.... I'd guess it's because the network has a deal with a competing product... but I've even seen Les Paul's with the "Gibson" on the headstock covered in black tape...

Not only that but I'm sure many of those guys playing on the TV gigs purchased their gear with their own money! I'm sure they had no problem affording it, but why give the free advertising if the manufacturer isn't going throw them a bone or endorsement deal.

I always notice that the keyboard players on TV almost always have the names\logos taped over, unless they're endorsees.

I'd consider doing the gaff tape gimmick to cover logos on my keyboard and bass gear, but I don't think I'd do anything permanent in case I have to sell any of it.

OK, I'm kidding, but only slightly...bassists are generally the biggest busybodies about other people's gear. Guitarists are supposed to be the ones hiding their secrets...bass players are completely obnoxious about what they use and constantly need validation. It's kind of refreshing to see someone who likes to hide their secrets from other bassists ;)

But seriously folks....

I played with a guitar player many moons back (I won't mention his name - you wouldn't believe me) but we did a quick TV appearance in LA LA land...anyway....he was playing this black Les Paul and had the head stock covered with black R&R tape...guitar sounded GREAT!!

I asked him after the appearance, "What? your sponsor will get ticked if he see Gibson on your guitar?!" He smiles kinda "wirely", peel the tape back and it is a Japanese copy...He says..."Man, if they ONLY knew!"...

Go figure!
