Who is moving music forward today?

IMO
Streetlight Manifesto completely blew my mind three years ago with Somewhere in the Between. It's something much bigger and better than ska (though I still love ska)
And 99 Songs of Revolution, released this year, does not disappoint either!

It didn't have to be mainstream, right?

Grinderman are awesome!! I read an article in a paper here with them recently, and it said something about them playing different instruments to what most of them play on the Bad Seeds stuff, and that they weren't allowed to play their regular instrument so that they had to think differently and come up with different stuff.

Crooked Vultures are fabulous.

But with a few of these guys, I just want music to make me happy. I have recently dug out some Unwritten Law, Millencolin, The Mark of Cain and New Found Glory all from around 10 years ago in my pop/punk days (well TMOC don't fit in that category) as it's getting into Summer here and I love this stuff pumping in the car when it's hot out. Makes it really feel like Summer!!

As for touring Justin - maybe you should tag along with Ke$ha in your MD role when she comes Down Under! I'll take you out for a good feed in Melbourne. ;)

also, i think deerhoof is doing some really cool stuff now. a little on the avant-garde side of the tracks, but with tons of raw energy, cool sounds, new-sounding arrangements and expressive vocals.

I think the Roots are mind blowing. Latest album is awesome, and the stuff they did with John Legend on ACL actually kept me up late one night just to watch it.

Mogwai has probably been influencing me more than anyone lately. Never boring.

The late Isis really evolved into such a great band. Related (somewhat), I'd also have to say Tool pushes the limit with every record they make.

I also love Josh Homme and all his projects. I flew to Boston from SC to catch the TCV show there before the album came out. Great experience- hearing all that music live before I'd heard anything on radio or the record itself.

Jack White is great too. My favorite stuff of his is actually the first Dead Weather album, but I think he is tremendously talented and the White Stripes really inspired a lot of garage bands to get out of the usual punk/indie circular track.

BTW this is such a great thread. I love it when people give their honest opinions about what is really moving them right now. It's where I get introduced to a lot of the great music that ends up in my CD changer. As I'm typing I'm listening to Grinderman for the first time on iTunes and it's freaking me out! (In a good way....)

Bjork.

LCD Soundsystem.
I'm getting close to digging this.

Lcd is amazing. Tame Impala is amazing.

Other bands I would have to mention have some kind of analog/electronic element mixed it. It is THE way of the future.
Not necessarily using sequencers, but instruments to make
live electronic music.

How to Destroy Angels
Lotus
Greenhouse Lounge
The Disco Biscuits
STS9
