WHOA...Digitech The Drop

Just curious, when the press releases (I found this one, which is basically the same as the Guitar World one above: Invalid Link Removed) mentions the algorithm is "drawn directly from" and "shares its DNA with" the Whammy DT, is that algorithm modified at all based on the recent development of the Bass Whammy?

All of our pitch shifting uses the same base algorithm, it gets modified according to the use/instrument of the particular pedal. For example, the base pitch shifting algorithm in the Vocalist LiveHarmony and Vocalist LiveFX is the same as in the Bass Whammy. But if you were to use a bass into the Vocalist it would not work well, since the algorithm has been tailored for voice.

That makes sense---and you might say that The Drop has variation of the algorithm that is intended to cover bass and guitar?

The Eb is def what I would want it for. I love playing in flats. But I usually play in standard or drop D.

Killing gods

Yeah, for me it would be worth 2 bills just for when an artist goes: "Lets do just this one song in Eb." I'm trying to retire my 5 string & Eb on the A string just isn't 'Eb' sometimes!

I've used my Morpheus on guitar live for just this sort of thing. It's actually, "we need to play this in D, but it would be great if I could play the C# as a low open chord" (I play in drop tuning on guitar). Would be awesome to be able to do the same thing on bass.

How does it relate to the Classic/Chords modes of the new whammys? It is hardwired as one of those two or is it something else since the DT came out before the option was there?

I'm going to have to try it, but that sounds good to me. I'll probably be using it 70-80% on guitar, 20-30% on bass.

It is permanently in chordal mode, but with some tweaks we learned from the Bass Whammy.

Classic Mode is far too glitchy for drop tuning full chords.

Nice, thanks. Could you elaborate on those tweaks?

I agree 100% on Classic being too glitch for chords, but for single notes the difference between the two is enough that I'll only use Classic mode with the v4th setting for that instant 5-er thing.

I'll probably buy it just to try it, but I would love to see this thing A/B against the Morpheus on guitar and bass. I'm not sure if it's appropriate for Digitech to produce such a video, but it's what I want to see out of this pedal more than anything. Heck, I'm not great at demos but I'd be willing to give it a try!

Hey DigiTechRep, did you ever get around to measuring the current draw?

They both draw ~210 mA, that includes inrush.

Thanks! I figured it was super-optimistic to think it could be powered off of a single 100 mA Voodoo outlet, but it's good news that the 250 mA outlets will work (or current doubling two 100s, as it's my understanding those are actually more like 110 mA).

I assume when you say "both" the other pedal you are referring to is the Luxe?

Yep, sorry! Doing a lot of drive-by's in a lot of forums today, my responses get shorter as the day gets longer!

Wish I'd seen this before 'wasting' Digitech support's time asking if it'd work on bass. FWIW, it was a fast response, too, and on a Monday morning no less.

I have to admit that $180 for this vs $200 for the Bass Whammy feels sorta painful, but I do understand they're pretty different and different uses. Maybe I'll get lucky and a new Bass Whammy will come out with this algo cooked in and I could downsize (because I definitely will be getting both...)

Still, this is a lot cheaper than a custom bass 6-string bass on a 5-string neck. I'm just hoping it's fast enough to track fast/technical playing while dropping the pitch 5 semitones. That was the specific question I asked, ie tuning a 5-string bass EADGC, and dropping it to BEADG. Seems I'd be asking a lot even out of a modern DSP, but knowing me, if it didn't sound perfect/hifi in that scenario I'd probably dig it as sounding 'cool as hell' anyway

it sounds odd saying it, too >.>

but I'd mainly be using it for some solo ambienty/non-droney stuff I do *shrug* I doubt I'd use it that way with other musicians.

I suppose I could also just get a Bass Whammy and rock the pedal as I went further up the neck with a standard tuned 5-string.

How dare you play YOUR bass the way YOU want to... /s. :)
