Who's Gigging With A Single Barefaced One10?

Congratulations on the SLK! One sweet ride. I have a CLA, which is basically the little brother of the CLS.
It is a four door coupe with a four cylinder engine, front wheel drive and a seven speed dual clutch transmission.
I am able to put one of two GK 112 cabs in the back seat. Your car is a different story. I know you'll make it
work somehow. Or do you have another vehicle you could use for gigs? Ride on!

I do not claim to be a physicist at all, so take whatever I say as you wish. We comment on "the laws of physics" as being fixed. I have no doubt they are, and that Alex is well aware of this.
In simplistic terms as I understand it to get more volume from, say, a traditional ten inch speaker we add another to enlarge cone area and air movement. Plus we can play around with voice coils, cone material, resistance, cabinet design etc. Again this is as I understand it but it makes sense to me. What Alex has done, as well as innovative cabinet construction, is to design from the ground up a new speaker. To me the significant break through of this speaker is that it moves considerably more air because it has much greater front to back movement than others (I think he calls it "pistonic displacement"???). This makes sense to me. You can move more air by adding speakers or by increasing the movement of a single speaker. As kids we used to do it when we made fans out of paper.
So this is the way I have explained to myself why the One 10 is so much more magically efficient than other tens - it can safely move forwards and back much more than other speakers and just as fast.
I recognize I may open a can of worms by posting this but hey, it is the holidays and always happy to learn.

Just note that increasing axial displacement of the cone increases SPL but also decreases sensitivity. There is a point of diminishing returns where the added SPL due to additional power (axial displacement) is exactly offset by the reduction in base sensitivity. At this point, that's all there is and no additional SPL can be achieved.

Lots of companies claim to

The rig on Tuesday night. Drummerless trio but that little One10 and ELF were spot on. Used the same rig Saturday night in the same trio set-up. I like my Super Midget for a little bit larger gigs, but for small/intimate venues, at low volume, I prefer not having the horn, which I like at higher volumes. Smooths the sound out. Ohio Tavern, Madison WI.

What do you think of the ELF compared to the MB200 with the One10?

Thanks man! Went for a 350 - 3.5 litre V6.

Being over in the UK, the chances to peel the roof off won't be that plentiful.....but when I can, I will!

I could get the use of another car on occasion, but in the end, I've gone for a Markbass 102P Traveler. That'll fit in the back nicely, and does away with the panic to buy another 1x10 when (and I'm quite sure after research) that I would have had to.

You know, it's hard to say. Both are very good with the One10. I thought I'd miss having the two mid controls of the MB200, but the single mid on the ELF seems well-centered, and honestly, I ran it flat last time out, any adjusting from the bass. Couldn't go wrong with either, but the MB200 is just so large ;)

What i do notice is:their main cabs are ported, except the 1x10 and 2x10 which are also much cheaper.
Like others i do think: 1x10" in a small sealed cab is not going to sound like a ported 12".
Maybe someone can explain to me why 10" often come in non vented cabs.
Im interested in the one10 to hook up with my Ampeg pf350+svt210av cab, getting all the power w 4 Ohm.
I was hoping for some deeper bass as the 210 is also sealed.the one10 specs makes me think it won't, but the next in line 12" ported one is almost twice the price.
I'd like to keep it small if i'm going to stack the 210 w the new 10" or 12"cab.
Any alternatives you can think of that won't cost me more than 300 pounds and are light enough(under 16kg?
I'm very happy w the Ampeg 210av sound and wouldnt want to go Hartke, Markbass if i can help it.
Leaning more towards Fender/Ampeg..
Having said that, a different type of sound w a solid bass might complement what i have..Eden perhaps?

Something to think about....even though as you pointed out the 12" BF cabs cost a little more, a Super Compact by itself would likely be much louder and much deeper than your existing 2x10 cab paired with a One 10. Especially if you get a more powerful amp.

well yeah, i could spend another 1000 on a different rig but that defeats the purpose.
I already have 1x15" cab i can hook my ampeg pf350 up with so def looking for a compact size 1x10 or 1x12"

My thinking was....sell your Ampeg cab, add that money to what you would have spent on a cheap cab to add to it, take that money and get one good cab that outperforms what those two cabs could have done together. Plus it will be much easier to carry. There's a good reason why the 12" BF cabs cost twice as much :)

i appreciate where you're coming from and i might consider it.the thing is: the 210 is small and light, 12kg and is great on small stages.i am very content most of the time.on bigger stages i use the 15".i have used both the 210 and the 15" on one occasion.simply great:low and tight.i have found that 18kg is about as much as i want to carry to a stage.the 1x15 is on rollers.i'd hate to let the 210av go.i have played w an aguilar 12" that was great and about the price range of the Bareface.mmm..

As per the title - I've read a few references on TB about players gigging with a single One10, but not a lot about their experiences and musical context.

Situation is, I'm changing the car to a Mercedes SLK - obviously, the trunk isn't the biggest, with the bass travelling on the passenger seat.

As I'm getting the car next week, a few weeks in advance I ordered a Barefaced One10, as it fits well in the back.

Up to now, I usually gig my Fender Rumble 115 cab (paired with the 500 head). It's normally pubs, small-ish venues. 3-piece power trio, my volume on the head is never more than about a 1/4! Bass is usually a Gibson SG.

I emailed Barefaced, and they were pretty confident that the One10 will match a single 112, or my 115, for output. I've read so many good things, I ordered it anyway, it just sounds too good.

How many out there in TB land are regularly gigging their One10? What kinds of bands/volume levels? I'm really hoping it'll fulfil my needs. BF were sure it would! I'd be reluctant to order another, as I'm not sure on the space....!
Unfortunately I think you’ll just have to figure this out by experience. as Different people tend to have different standards on what works for them. For example for my rock band in not happy unless I have at minimum a single 410. I prefer to have both of my cabs. I also have a friend who gigged for several years with just a bass and a sans amp direct to the pa, no amp, no in ears or anything and he claimed it worked for him.

I just spent a couple of hours testing my Ampeg SVT210AV vs my Barefaced Two10. Only in my house mind, about 1 ft from a wall, at loud, but not quite gig volume. Tested with both a Darkglass M900, Orange Terror Bass, Yamaha BB1025X and Fender P with flats, so a range of tones.

Firstly, the Barefaced One10 / Two10 are not sealed. The site says they have a 'hybrid resonator', and while I'm not sure what that means exactly, there is definitely a port on these cabs which helps them get their low end.

The Ampeg is severely lacking in lows compared to the Barefaced. However you could EQ in a bit of bass boost to redress the balance, ultimately they are not going to be able to produce the same SPL as the Barefaced. The Ampeg had a much growlier top end though, it sounded like it was producing some pleasing distortion. I get the feeling the Barefaced would produce the same effect but only when pushing a lot more air. Other then that they are not too dissimilar in sound, and I think a One10 paired with a SVT210AV would probably match up brilliantly (with the One10 on the floor and Ampeg on top).

I could try something equivalent but on steroids, a Two10 with two SVT210AVs on top, but the wife and kids are home now so I had to turn it all off! :D

Thanks a lot.that really helps clearing things up.i was wondering about that 'hybrid resonator enclosure'in the BF.Barefaced does offer some insight.i can see one port but fr a vid it turns out NOt to be one .the cab is very small(.maybe it acts like other lightweight cabs ie, let the thin box create/amplify the lows.put in slightly higher spl drivers and the difference between the Ampeg and the BF becomes clear.Since you have the Two10 it might also sound different from the One10.And yes, the svtav do sound pleasing when pushed but as you say, spl wise they are quite low due to the 2 10"s emi drivers.plus it lacks some bottom end.
Since then i added a 12" sealed floor monitor with an emi beta12.more low end.cant stack it but will be handy as an extra.its about 15kg.as the emi beta12 is only $68, if the cab works then why not? The One10 is 369 p sterling.I really have to hear one to be convinced that the bass will hold up.They are small and lightweight (7kg) so that's convenient.at the moment im more inclined to believe that a 12" in a sealed cab will do a better job.

Both myself and others have not taken the effect of the Passive resonator into account and focused almost entirely on the driver. It is true that physics don't allow much low end in small sealed cabs w small drivers. It is my understanding that the PR handles/utilizes a lot of the low frequencies so that a small sealed cab can use a less heavy driver.
It remains a sealed cab w a PR unlike a ported cab.
Too bad we don't have many One10 sound files or comparison clips..:(..yet.come on Alex and others, give us some !!

It's not a passive resonator is it? I thought it was something more similar to a fostex design?
