Who's transcribing what right now?

Just personally I love Jaco's compositions more than I do his bass playing.

At the moment transcribing Paul Chambers on So What... To start getting into Paul Chambers. I love his sense of melody. Also listening to a recording of McCoy Tyner w/ Ron Carter and Elvin Jones playing Impressions (killer piano and bass solos), and taking a line from Ron, say a two bar phrase, and writing it out and continuing the idea and developing it, which I find is super helpful for finding my own ideas and clarifying and cementing them.

Transcribing Marcus Miller's bassline on the tune "The Nightfly" from Donald Fagen's solo album of the same line, which was suggested by my teacher. Not really transcribing any solos right at the moment, but have a few things in mind which I'm listening to.

Really? Maybe on the internet but I've never seen or heard of this in the real world.

Eh, well where I'm at there's such an adoration for Jaco among the teachers and the students, it almost feels like a cult. Then again, music school isn't the real world. But what really perplexes me is the Marcus Miller cult. If you EVER say that you don't really dig Marcus, you'll never hear the end of it.

Berklee right? I'm not really surprised to be honest. Now that you mention it a guy at my school the other day went around saying he hates Coltrane (in those exact words) which led to the same outcome. Lots of one-minded people out there.

Just gonna briefly touch on the Jaco thing: I agree that his live improvising had nothing on his studio playing. I don't think he's as good as a lot of the players out there these days. People don't want to acknowledge it, they're scared of it, the fact that Jaco, to a certain extent, was and still is a product of hype. As a bass player, it seems you HAVE to LOVE Jaco and cowtow to his legacy, or else you're crucified. Whatever. My take on it is that he wasn't as superhuman amazing as lots of people think he is, and I don't like his music. I guess I'm doomed to burn in hell forever.

Right now, I'm transcribing Pat Metheny on Solar, off Question and Answer with Roy Haynes and Dave Holland.

With Jaco, the main thing I see is people get pissed if you don't offer his due respect. Sure, he may not be YOUR cup of tea, his music may sound outdated and his skill may not be impressive to you compared to contemporary artists, but his innovation and what he did for the instrument are facts and should be acknowledged and respected. The same holds true for Marcus, I mean the guy is a Grammy winning musician, respected throughout the community and has played with guys who are held in the highest esteem.

I could see where some may get mad if you say that they're a "product of hype", being they've earned all of the adulation they've received. Doesn't mean you have to treat him as some demi-god though.

Jaco is right along side the other "pioneers" of the instrument for me, and if you're in that select few out of all of the millions of bass players out there, you're pretty damn good.

Any one tackling anything off palmystery yet? I'm playing "the lesson" now, I have the whole basic melody in the beginning which is pretty easy but haven't incorporated the thumping that Vic does in it yet. I think this tune is in g minor.

Just finished the first chorus of Charlie Haden's solo on 'Waltz for Ruth' off of the Beyond the Missouri Sky album w/Pat Metheny. After juries-i'm going to finish the 2nd chorus. I also transcribed the head, changes, and Charlie's bass line behind the head.

I'm almost done with Jaco's solo off of Bright Size Life on the tune of the same name.

Next electric transcription/lead sheet, i'm thinking it will be Jamerson's bass line off of "ABC" or "I Want You Back". Next jazz electric will probably be more Jaco.

Next double bass-some more Ray Brown off of his 'Walk On" album or more Charlie Haden. I've really been diggin those guys for the past few years. Also-more walking lines for standards from Ray, Charlie, and i'm thinking some Charles Mingus.

If I PM my transcription of Marcus Miller's bassline for Maputo would someone be able to go through it and check it for mistakes? I really want to get confirmation of the work I've done, and if necessary be directed to the areas that are wrong.

Any golden ears on TB have the time to help out?

Thanks in advance.

got 2 1/2 weeks off from uni, gonna do some stuff. tenor sax solo on phranceing (not sure of the details of this one, was told to do it by a teacher haha), Jaco's bassline on Havona, and a track off a live Jon Cleary album I have (on which the rhythm section is absolutely cookin!)

I'm currently working on 'have you met miss jones', off the chet baker "lonely star" album (though i think it was originally from a different record). transcribing the melody (chet)and his solo on electric and doing the walking line on double.

also recently put down mm's "run for cover", a live version. and also his bassline on "never too much" with luther vandross. oh, and i did excerpts of some fills in the bassline from jaco's "cannonball", from the jaco tribute "word is out" album recently (bona on bass). some really great bebop-ish lines that i've been trying to work into my vocab.

i'm constantly working on rep (for different gigs as well as tunes for myself), but to be honest it's not very often i commit them to notation. trying to make an effort to actually notate all the stuff i do now!

great thread.. impressive what some of you guys are up to!
