Who's transcribing what right now?

Yo, that's Wilton Felder playing, not Jamerson. Some of my favorite basslines ever! Amazing grooves.

I gotta research that guy. The lines are so tasty. I copped a few riffs/fills for a few tunes in the musical 'Starting Here, Starting Now' when our music director wanted a more groovy feel.

I wanted to post this here because if it wasn't for Janek's advice I probably would have not been up for the challenge of learning to play this. I was skeptical about transcribing stuff by horn players.... i was locked in to just working out bass solos for quite awhile.
I found the transcription in a bunch of loose music I had. I started working on it a few weeks ago. Here is the final result

BTW the transcription was in Bb so I got to work on transposing as well.

When my new Lakland arrives I will start transcribing the whole of Marvin Gaye's Whats Going On.
Ive worked out the changes before and improvised on them but Ive never sat down and learned Jamerson and Babbits lines before.

I've finally got my own online store happening!

you can find it at www.janekgwizdala.com

right now I'm posting live concerts that the band has played in the recent past. They were recorded on anything from an iPod all the way up to some serious high end gear, and I've "mastered" them and processed them to 256Kbps MP3's in a zip file for you to download. All tracks that are available have a 96kbps 30sec preview for you to check out before you buy.

Downloads are per set. $4.99 per set, $8.99 fro a bundle of two sets, and $11.99 for a bundle of three sets. Sets average about 60 mins of music, with some being around 70. Once you make a purchase you'll be sent a password that unlocks the zip files.

For everyone who couldn't make it out to a gig because you live in Tokyo, Sydney, London, Dayton, Seattle or capetown..... these are for you! Bringing you right inside the club to the gig.

All MP3's are tagged with metadata so they load straight into whatever media player you use.

Please give me any feedback you can as this is a brand new thing for me, and I'm sure there'll be things to work out along the way.

Easy,

Janek

I've been working this week on Mistura Fina, the title track to the '95 Patitucci album of the same name. Just got one of the sax breaks down and working on parts and phrases in Patitucci's solo that really jumped out at me.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has this album, as i really dig the brazillian vibe on it.. but it doesn't seem to be as popular as some of his other disks.

one of my two favorite albums of John's, and a very underrated one too I think.

there are some really amazing moments of phrasing on this album, some of john's best playing ever IMO.

You should also check out one more angel, my other fav album of his.

Easy,

Janek

Awesome thanks Janek, i don't have that one ! Thanks for the tip.. I've been listening to JP on and off for years, his playing, versatility, musicianship and especially his skill with a pen has always blown me away... but i'm just REALLY digging his stuff recently for some reason. I know you say not to transcribe other bass players, but i must admit I've already stolen a lot! :)

Janek- Totally agree, I think Mistura Fina and One More Angel are the best of John's work. I also like Heart of the Bass (parts of it) very much.

Right now I'm transcribing a bunch of assorted pop tunes for an arranging gig I'm doing. For me I'm transcribing Herbie's solo on Kuru/Speak Like A Child. The way that Herbie can make simple ideas and space speak is nothing short of amazing. Something that grew from time spent with Miles?

Just finished up a John Pisano solo on In a Mellow Tone from some compilation I found for a couple of bucks. Next up, some Ray Brown walking lines, and most probably going to go for some Cannonball, though Oscar Peterson has been ringing in my ears lately...

OSCAR!!! YES!!! if you get your hands on a records called "just for my friends" with Bob Durum (spelling?!) and sam jones on it.... incredible version of moanin' that was a big turning point for me in transcription.

Easy,

Janek

You guys amaze me! I love these solo's, but don't have much experience transcribing. I just finished ABC and I Want You Back, by the Jackson 5, and was surprised to see it was Wilton Felder playing, not Jamerson.
Janek what would be your advice to a beginner transcriber to start getting towards the 'next-level?'
Also your columns in BGM really help!

Thanks,

Jaydin
