Who's Your Favorite Custom Builder???

Just have one custom. If I decide in the future to have another, I would probably contact Christoph Dolf at Bassculture (http://www.bassculture.de/) to build me another one. Great guy to deal with, very nice balanced basses with confy necks, natural sound, and affordable custom prices. If you favor passive basses, fretless, with a natural wood sound (in lack of a better description), he is someone to consider.

Glad to meet some Alembic owners here garmenteros, malthumb and Deburgh. The Wickershams are great people, I adore my 98 Rogue 5 string. I took a magnifying glass too it when I got it. They must of used one too, it's perfect. I'm a member of the Alembic club by the same name. Alembic, the standard to live up to.

Alembic.....need I say more!

I prefer the basses that I build ... there are many that are built better ... but the ones I build meet my specs so they are a good fit for me.

AMEN! For those of you that do not know, Ric5 has custom-converted Rickenbacker 4-string 400x basses over the years to the best-built 5-string basses that I for one have ever seen, and his ability to adjust the nut, string spacing and do the bridge conversion - while retaining and even improving the playability and performance of the bass in the process - is second to none.

His basses truly turned out better than the factory's own short-lived attempts to produce a 5-string version of the 400x bass, and who knows better how it should turn out than an extremely competent and experienced luthier AND musician like Ric5? :)

Just thought that he should not be allowed to take so little credit for his own worthy accomplishments, at least with the Ricks. I do not doubt that he is doing similar feats of lutherie with other brands too nowadays :smug:

Dude ... you are way too generous ... But I have made a few nice 4 string to 5 string conversions ... I am not a luthier ... perhaps you could call me a talented tinkerer ... these days I am really enjoying my fenderbird and jazz 5 string basses ...

Tom Clement built my #1 player-his version of a Jazz, and the neck he built couldnt be better. Fits me perfectly.
A superb person to talk to, even after the deal is done-just a way cool guy with awesome prices to boot! Just wish I didnt have a teenager going to college-I'd love to order a fretless from him (or a 5 string fretted, or............)

I also once owned an Alembic but it wasnt a custom-order. It was off-the-rack (wall??) at a local music store.
Wasnt exactly my cuppa java but there is no denying the workmanship was astounding and mine was just a lower end model. I can still see the quilted maple top in my dreams.
