Who's Your Favorite Custom Builder???

My vote goes to our own TB'er JohnK (John Kallas)

He built me a 69 Jazz with all of the "MOJO" you can imagine.
The best part are his necks, IMHO The best necks I have ever played.

I'm ordering an "A" Neck 62' P Bass shortly.

This is one of those "VERY FEW" instruments that I can't put down.

Has anyone tried any of his basses?

thanks,
Funky

1. Alembic.

I haven't owned one (yet... ;)) but I've played and the quality is simply second to none. I love the attention to detail, the overall vibe and the SOUND. I've also exchanged several emails with Mica and she's an incredibly nice and helpful person who's always willing to walk that extra mile for a customer - even a prospective one.

2. Nexus.

I had a Nexus bass and even though I bought it 2nd hand mr Jacek Kobylski (the man behind the brand) was very helpful and nice and gave me a good discount when I came to him for a repair/setup job with a Shining 5 he had made 12 years earlier. He's an extraordinarily nice person and it's easy to see building instruments is a great passion of his. And he's one hell of a bassist!

Check out the individual nuts:

WOW, I've never seen/heard of these, but dang...they be sweet!!! although the individual nut looks really cool, seems to me like a bad idea. the more i think about it, the more it seems like a degradation to design than an improvement. is there any rationale for why he did this or just cause it looks cool (cause it does).

EDIT:did some research...his site says:
Open notes sound the same as fretted notes with a Zero Fret. Directly mounted Individual String Guides are solidly mated with the neck. The elements are round to match the circular theme established with the Braille logo, truss rod cover, tuner posts, knobs, etc. They also help avoid the ugly butt joints usually used with normal bar shaped nuts.

i still think it's a bad idea. what if you want to change string gauges to a thicker string and then back to a thinner gauge? you'd have to have another one of these little things made and attached to the neck. i'm a big fan of the 0 fret, but i think that a nut and 0 fret makes much more sense (functionality wise - but sure does look cool).

Guess I'm going to have to be biased and say our very on Wilser Ramirez. I really think people should watch out for this guy in the next year or so. If he keeps going what he is doing and offering the customer service he does, he's going to explode!

Here is what he built for me:

Then I guess I will mention him. I am a relative newbie to all of this, but I picked up one of his 5 string single cut basses off of ebay recently. Very light weight, excellent playability, perfectly balanced standing or sitting, very organic sound with notes that jump off the fretboard and sustain for days.
I have picked up many much more expensive basses that could only dream of sounding like this..
