Why arent drummers considered musicians?

Because they don't play music. :ninja:

My drummer told me this summer while we were on tour that he doesn't think of himself as a musician. He thinks of himself as someone who learned a skill or a craft. He can read rhythms and he teaches but he doesn't know the first thing about music.

I told him this was BS but after talking to him more I understand his point. It's all about how you choose to look at it I suppose.

a lot of drummers are noise makers IMO. very few can caress a kit just right and make it sing.
it takes a fine touch not to overhit them and overplay them.
i am spoiled because my brother is one of the musical drummers; i have seen him take a virtual toy drumset and make it sound like an expensive one. that is rare.

It would break my drummer's heart. He's an assistant editor at Modern Drummer... and one of the greatest musicians I've ever known.

Bass and drums are like peanut butter and jelly. If we invalidate the musicianship of our drummer brethren we invalidate ourselves as well.

chase out those foolish thoughts.

a drummer that can only play simple beat in 4/4 aren't musician ... they are gloryfied metronome. A great drummer don't do a beat, they are like a 4th voice accentuating everyone rythm. They know what everyone play. Also, when drummer/percussionnist go to a music college ... they will play marimba.
