Why do I hate ebony finger boards?

The word "hate" has been given way too much power these days. And its new-found power has been abused by people with agendas (and, no, not just political ones).

"I hate coffee" 35 years ago simply meant that I didn't like the taste of coffee. Today, to a good percentage of the population, "I hate coffee" means that I hate, and wish death and destruction upon, all coffee drinkers and their friends and family and everything they stand for. Nothing would please me more than to persecute coffee drinkers. In fact, I sit with other coffee haters in smoke-filled "back rooms" plotting the destruction of all things coffee and everyone who is pro coffee.

OP just used the word "hate" to describe his dislike for ebony. Don't give that mkre power than it has.




By the way, coffee popped into my brain because I love it and am in desperate need of roughly a gallon of it as we speak. If this hotel has bad coffee, there may be violence.

Maybe I'm assuming too much here, but perhaps you should switch to decaf.

Ebony is great. I love it.
The only reason it isn't used on more instruments is because it is very expensive.
It's okay if you don't like it. There's no accounting for taste.

Just experienced my first ebony board and I really like how it looks, especially with no markings. So hard to tell what timbral properties it may or may not impart, but I just love the way ebony contrasts with a natural body. I also like maple, rosewood and spinach mixed with a lot of cheese and garlic.

Been using ebony since the 70s, love it.
Even when the maple neck cracked, the ebony didn't.
And its the after effects of broccoli and asparagus, I don't like, but the same can be said for hot peppers and frijoles.

To the OP. I'm going to say i prefer rosewood as FB because its soft and comfortable to play on. I like the duller tone. I have two ebony's. They're ok, i dont really think about that playing those basses. I tend to stay away from the maple FB, because i dont like the hard feeling under my fingers and its way to bright for me.

I totally agree. Makes sense on a fretless because it will hold up a lot better then other woods do to it's properties. I can see the appeal of ebony, just not for me I suppose.

The way i look at it- especially equipment wise, if you know what you like, you can save money not buying what you dont like.

Just not a fan, and I'm really not exactly sure why. Something about the response of the wood maybe.

Personally ebony is my FB wood of choice. Feel free to dislike them all you want. No biggie.
