Why does my bass sounds so good?

I think we can ALL agree on this. And that's regardless of what kind of hit their wallet had to take to get there.
I can't afford high-end gear,once again I will state that I am 15,and I do not have a solid income.In my case,I save up for about a year to buy what I want,or I head to my garage and build it.
Well, if you can afford to do it try it out.
You can always change the pickups and bridge back.
This way you'll have experience in replacing parts. (In wich I for example an advanced player suck at.)
And you'll get experience with what modifications affect the sound in what way. Win win.

thats cool, i just built my own pbass too. I did some relicing on it, but put all the parts together myself. Got a Warmoth Neck, Highway 1 body, and 62 Ri pups. I love the sound. What kind of strings are you using?

if you ever wondered HOW MANY others are in the same situation as you, check out that thread.
it is entitled "the cheapest bass......." look how many supposedly junk no dollar value basses in there people have, and totally use them as their #1 player...
although I do not use my frankenbass anymore as my main player, it never failed me when I did, always stayed in tune, and had fine tone.

As an example... I spent $150 on an SX Bass here on TB. The previous owner already put a different bridge on it, and a Quarter Pounder pickup. I visually modded the living hell out of the bass after I got it as originally it was only a flat gray color.
End result is this bass mysteriously sounds MUCH different then when I got it and plays fantastic (much to do with a fretjob and setup by myself). I've had multiple studio sessions where I started playing a high end P or J owned by the studio and ended playing this $150 mutt of an P-bass.
It works. And the very idea that something like that can be 'liked' and god forbid preferred is offensive as hell to a lot of people here who so sadly believe that only high dollar gear can sound high dollar.

same here. I have a Franken-P where i put a 21-fret neck where originally it had a 22 fret neck, so there's a gap in the neckpocket abaout as wide as the thickness of a finger, and i haven't played a P-Bass that i liked more than this one, and the ones i liked equally as much cost about 10 times more.

i don't know why it has taken me so long to see this bass, but that's twice now in like a day or two. and i have to say, i heart it, i heart it so bad. i wish i could p like that...
now back to the topic at hand.

With this thread you are inspiring me.
I'm about to pull the trigger on having a custom bass build.
But the last weeks I've been trying out several basses to make sure what I want.
I would gladly buy a stock instrument if one suits me.
A cheap bass with modifications that cost as much as the cheap bass I have in mind would only cost a quarter on the custom.
Sorry I couldn't reply sooner,had some work to take care of.I'd like to hear more of this custom build you mentioned,I love hearing stories about other peoples basses.
Its cool that you put together something you dig on the low. However, isn't it tough to really gauge an instrument through that amplifier? I've used the same amplifier at a buddies house and everything was a bit pinched. Good for low volume practice though.
What I meant was that I am have second thoughts to go through with having a custom build.
I have 3 cheap Yamahas wich I love actually, one of them has been with me many years and was used for gigging in two bands. Alongside a MIM Jazzbass.
I never heard complaint from my bandmembers, people that came to listen, or from myself.
I let go of the MIM Fender because the Yamaha suited me better.
I think it's mainly other bassists that will notice if you are playing with a certain bass, wether it's a cheap one or an expensive.
You are inspiring me (along with some other members of this forum) to modify my current basses.
Or if I need an extra bass to find one cheap used or new and make something cool of it.
I always wanted another Precision bass.
I can pull the trigger on that custom bass anytime.
(fretless 4string with maple body and neck, P-style pickup)
It's not because I can afford that custom job that it will make me cool or will make me play better. It might, but not guaranteed.
Wasting money will make me foolish if the custom doesn't has what it needs after all.
