Don't get me wrong, I love it too-- but a Jazz bass can mimic the P tone quite well. Why not something more versatile, like a PJ?

Why does TalkBass love the P Bass so much?

Kibble, milkbones, and P Basses. And redheads.
1. It's iconic.
2. It's the ultimate in plug and play. Rounds or flats, it fits the mix/balance immediately.
3. A Jazz will NOT mimic the tone.

I'm a Jazz guy now but grew up with a P and still have a couple. They are different but a P in the right hands will showcase ones true talent without the growl. A Jazz cannot duplicate a P but can approximate it. PJs are a different sound as well. Plenty of love for all here just search.

Because a P sits in the mix...I mean cuts through the mix...err...something to do with "the mix".
It's reflection of society's taste.
IMHO it's important to understand that there are lot's of different P bass sounds.
Back in my youth I become pretty much anti-P. My first bass was a Ric 4001. To this day I have not gigged a real P, even once. I do own a P, but it's a vintage Elite II, which does not typically sound like a P IMHO.
My #1 since about 1995 has been a Yamaha TRB6P.

I have one P bass, three J's and three PJ's. They're all different in their unique ways. I don't try to get them to mimic one another.

Both a Jazz and a PJ will give you options.
In my case, the P bass was an acquired taste. It took me nearly thirty years of playing to get there.
My main bass is a 6 string with J setup. The fact that the P bass only has one pickup, only four strings and a severely reduced number of frets brings the focus to the money part of the fretboard, which can be a good thing.
It makes you look younger, skinnier and with more hair…
The same question might be posed about the Jazz bass, and after an exhaustive board search, I've found people actually love the Jazz bass even more.
