why is there no 1176 compressor in a pedal...

The 1176 wich I have been an engineer in studios that had a rack full of them, I can say that its been acurately replicated in software form. The 1176 while in hardware is nice, its eye candy now.

What I want is a UAD-2 in pedal format.

And indeed as stated above, transformers play a HUGE role in sound. I used to swap out output transformers in silverfaces for different tones. Not to mention the fact that some of those were ultralinear.

And just sticking some 7025's in a compressor pedal wont get you there either. I heard that the retrospec is back, but I could have been dreaming or drunk..
 
Yep. I just have to put my danged $0.00314 in to say that it could be done and if need be the company can make a cheaper unit to make their real profit from. Why even mention this..well..it costs money to make an 1176, and nobody's gonna do it for free.

Now back to topic, Give me a box that replicates an LA2A, 1176, and some focusrites..im there.
 
Bottom line: If you want an 1176 in a pedal, buy one and pay to have it reconfigured to fit in a smaller box for stomp box applications.

For the rich rockstars, whada ya care; the crew humps all the boxes anyway.

For the manufacturer: by the time you get through R&D, legal, manufacturing set ups, raw materials, advertising, and then determine what it would have to sell for in order to break even in like 3 years, I think it would be clear that the idea would loose money even with a very optomistic sales forecast.

If it sells for $600, how many could you sell; maybe 200 units in 3 years?
 
Guys, there are plenty of boutique pedals that cost $300 to $1000. The makers are not rolling in profit, because of the high cost of production and overhead, and the small market; but there is a market, and there are a lot of players in that market, and anyone who spends time on TGP knows that a ridiculous amount of cash flows into that market.

Well, when you said a big part of the issue is "the cost ...especially considering the target market", it sure sounded to me like you made an assumption about what the target market is, and you assumed that the cost would make the project prohibitive to that target market. I suppose you could have been just speaking generally, but we are discussing a very specific product, and the person who asked the question (i.e. the target market) is able to pay for high-end equipment. When working for Neve, does your boss ever say "remember to keep the component cost down, considering our target market"?

Don't get me wrong--since this is a technical discussion of a high-end audio processor, it's great that we have participation from an engineer whose professional specialty is high-end audio processors. I truly welcome your input. But it would be great if your comments were more focused on the questions that were actually asked. :)

yes, we to have to keep a target cost in mind. it is a challenge.
 
Unless it could be digitaly modeled on the cheap (ala VT pedal) it's a white elephant.

Like trying to sell Ferrari's at a Hyundai dealership; very few stompbox buyers would shell out that kind of cash and could only be built as a hobby project by botique builders

For those of you that have neer used an 1176, they are great compressors, but are merely just a tool; I like them a lot but rarely ever rented one for projects so as long as there was something else with similar performance on hand

Back in the day, many of the top NY rock stuidos (read Media Sound and Power Station)
would have equal call for SSL, Neve, dbx, Drawmer, Symetrix, etc gear for bass use

Doubt that any engineer could identify an 1176 vs some other quality compressor on a CD
 
OK if the devices inside the box were chips that were populated by machine and not discrete SS electronics with transformers then one could expect the price to be lower than the $1,999 retail price of the original.
I think it's also safe to say that the original R&D costs as well as tooling have long been amortized by UA; if they were making huge profits on this, standard economics would dictate a similar design would compete in the market place; I wonder if the patent is even still active
 
No, there are other companies commercially marketing production-model clones of the 1176. I.e. not DIY guys brewing them in their garage (though they exist too), but real companies with legal obligations, competing with UA for the same product (even using very similar trade dress). The brand "Purple" has had quite a bit of commercial success and acclaim from their version.
 
The best thing about analog is that distortion is a feature, not an annoyance.
