That is exactly what every post I've responded to did...

Society was way different back then. Maybe he didn't play for the Armed Forces (we don't know this for sure) but he had a huge impact in and outside of the music scene. As mentioned previously from musical styles, fashion, dance and stage shows! Like I said, the fact that tributes are being done for the man proves he left a legacy. And that's not to slight any other artist because there are many who will deserve the same accolades!

No doubt - Prince was huge. One of the bigger musical acts of the end of the 20th century.

...but the Andrews sisters, in their day, were the Beatles/Elvis of the time... except they have more top 10 Billboard hits than either Elvis or the Beatles.

I don't recall anyone bringing up different eras. Maybe you're reading into things that aren't there. We are all focused on the subject of Prince and folks started bringing up other artists from Minnesota. Typical of many TB threads. They just get side-railed into something else. I don't think we need to discuss any other artists at this point. It's kinda getting pointless.

How about "Why Madonna and not Sheila E did the Prince tribute?" As the OP intended the thread to go.

So....you can only come up with artists who go back 40 years? You don't have any names or video/audio of Minneapolis artists to rival Prince within the past 30 years or so?

Well - because that is kind of a boring question that everyone knew the answer to before the thread.

There is no "discussion" to be had on that topic - just an echo chamber of fact.

It was answered in like the 4th post, and the OP knew the answer when he posted the original post.

Swing, boogie-woogie, ragtime, blues, calypso, jazz, ballads, folk, country-western, seasonal, and religious music - including an album of gospel standards.

They recorded songs from Russia, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil.

I'll give you the "different genres", and yes, they sang and danced, but once again you skipped over the all-around musicianship (and brilliant musicianship at that), plus the composing and producing that I mentioned in other posts. Also, singing, dancing and playing at the same time, while being the band leader and the creator of the music and sound that the band plays. This is why, again with all due respect to the Andrews Sisters, the comparison fails.



Unless, of course, you have proof that the Andrews Sisters composed and produced their own signature music, and also put together and directed the band as well.

We should remember this. Prince was a fierce critic of sample and paste "music," he really wanted young folks to learn to play.

I don't know...... that Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy was a pretty snappy tune.

You know what's happening here is that according to Mr Fitler Funk and some other folks here is that Prince is the greatest of all times and no one will ever be better than him and demands we show him the respect they all believe he deserves, While Mr. Nelson was a talented guy they have a hard time dealing with the fact that others don't feel the same way as they do about there beloved musical hero . Todd Rundgren is equally if not more so talented in his body of work and as an acclaimed producer , Yes there are others , So lets just let it be shall we.

No one in this thread EVER said that! No one in the thread EVER implied that. All we did was respond to the obvious dislike for him by you and another poster. I don't understand why you and this other poster have to come in threads and add negative remarks. This is typical behavior by many Talkbass members and it's downright annoying! If you don't feel Prince deserves a more fitting tribute, that's your prerogative! But to completely dismiss his contribution to the field shows ignorance and disrespect. Todd Rundgren has absolutely had a great career and has contributed greatly to the field. He gets the same respect and fitting tributes when that time comes. I personally mentioned several other artists from the great state of Minnesota and gave them the respect they deserved. I guess that wasn't enough. No one EVER said Prince was the be all end all of artists. No one! Finally....as long as the disrespect continues, the more I personally will continue to defend him. If it's anything like the tribute Prince got when receiving the BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 (which, BTW, featured Esperanza Spalding singing and playing "If I Was Your Girlfriend"), it will be well worth watching!

I was OK with Madonna doing the tribute. They both ruled MTV in a similar time and I think of them as contemporaries.

But when that purple throne spun around, the classier thing would have been for it to have been empty, and for Madonna to be sitting next to it on a smaller chair. Or something.

Bilal: Very good job of singing and performing "The Beautiful Ones."

Stevie Wonder and Tori Kelly: Underwhelming - and Stevie's my all-time favorite.

Maxwell: Did an excellent, heartfelt rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U."

Jennifer Hudson: Her "Purple Rain" was good, but too over-the-top for me.

Janelle Monae: Tore it up with a rousing medley of Prince hits.

Sheila E.: Simply brought the house down!


Overall - I'm happy!

I have not been able to watch the entire tribute yet, but my initial assessment coincides with yours. BET came correct!

Apparently some people the industry are thinking Madonna's career might be ripe for a relaunch, and this was an opportunity to test the waters. She has 4 live albums and 13 studio albums, and lord knows how many godawful videos already recorded. I'm sure some record label exec is drooling over the potential revenue opportunities that catalog represents if she takes off again.
