Why Madonna, not Sheila E. Did the Prince tribute.

I will say that Sheila Escovedo would have been a better choice, Madonna .... Really ?
I think Prince would be now busy jamming with the likes of Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson among others. Not many contemporaries can hang with those cats, the man deserves an utmost respect.

That's what.
Slow day here (waiting for lunch)...so I gotta-
Madonna is the antithesis of what Prince was about.
Compare each one's Super Bowl show for a quickie perspective.

So, if you wanna honor the man...give him the best, i.e. no poseurs.

While I am getting over myself, you can get a grip. A person who is not jealous or hating, will admit the simple fact that Prince was one of the biggest and most influential artists of the late twentieth century. The man was incredibly gifted and a huge influence on how music sounded for a twenty year period. Heck, I barely listened to Motörhead, but it was obvious that Lemmy made a huge impact. Dio was a great singer, even if I never bought his music. Merle Haggard clearly spoke for millions of working class white people. I truly feel sorry for someone who can only appreciate music that you personally like.

...and as much as I like all those artists, including Prince... none of them made a huge impact on music and all will be minor footnotes in music history 200 years from now.

We've just really, really lowered the bar on greatness in our society.

Would you mind naming some of these musicians, and illustrating their nationwide/worldwide influence? Would many people outside of the Twin Cities area even know who they are? Have they had a huge variety of well-established, highly-accomplished music industry professionals, who clearly are not starry-eyed fanboys and fangirls, singing their praises over the past three decades? Do they have video after video and recording after recording demonstrating their prowess as singers, all-around musicians, stage performers and producers?

So...two?

I'm not seeing how they match up with Prince as all-around musicians, stage performers and producers. And neither has been nearly as relevant as Prince over the past three decades, as per my post.

For the record, I haven't read any posts asserting that Prince is the Alpha/Omega of Minneapolis music. You'd think Prince's detractors, especially the ones who clearly don't like him at all, even to the point of calling him a "dope" and a "diva" in another thread, would avoid any thread with "Prince" in the title like the plague!

Funny that you mentioned Dylan...his music just doesn't speak to me at all. However, if someone started a Dylan thread, I wouldn't make it a point to repeatedly enter the thread just to say negative things about him, or to say that he's just "one of many" noteworthy musicians.

I don't know how many drummers can solo and have thousands of people completely mesmerized by the performance. I saw Prince and Sheila E. on stage and they were giants. Seems pretty small to judge other people " relevance" . Also seems kind of morbid to moralize on what kind of diseases and/or addictions someone had. National sport of posthumous ankle biting.

I guess we all see things from different perspectives. The thing I find most annoying is that people on this forum that aren't from here seem to think that Prince was the only relevant musician from the area because he has been so popular the last three decades, Your certainly entitled to that opinion but it doesn't make it true or historically accurate, you are only looking at a certain era in time instead of the larger picture. Prince was a talented musician but hardly a genius by definition. Was he someone who made a massive impact on music in general ? I guess time will tell.

That's why I said there is a thin line between giving your opinion and trolling. I do draw the line at people who clearly do not like an artist and only post to be negative.

I will never understand the mindset of a troll. I guess dumping on an iconic figure gives them a sense of power they don't have otherwise.

As the person who started this thread, the fact that you have drawn it away from its original subject is really annoying. Your opinion of where Prince fits in the overall scheme of Minnesota music has nothing to do with the artists who should represent him at a tribute. You had nothing to say about the topic, you just posted to give your negative opinion of Prince.

Here, your opinion looks like trolling. Since your view matters to you, why start your own thread?

Album Sales -

Prince: 100 million albums sold to a population average around 290,000,000
Andrews Sisters: 75-100 million albums sold to a population average around 165,000,000

Movie Appearances -

Prince: 3 movies
Andrews Sisters: 17 movies

Popular Charts:

Prince: 51 charted Billboard hits, 19 reaching Top 10 status
Andrews Sisters: 113 charted Billboard hits, 46 reaching Top 10 status

Plus there were all the major TV commercials and having their own radios show on NBC/CBS for about 6 years.

They were one of THE biggest names in entertainment (movies, music, radio, theater) in the entire USA for a pretty large amount of time.

Eh, I'm not much of a Dylan fan either... but the absolute ludicrous hyperbole of this thread needs it's bubble popped a bit.

This is ridiculous thread drift. It has nothing to do with why I started the thread.

Welcome to internet message boards.

If you want to control the direction of a discussion, a blog may be more to your speed.

I know I can't control what you write, but I can certainly point out that you and another person have dragged this thread way off topic into a discussion of whether Prince was important or not, instead of who should pay tribute to him at awards shows.

IME, if a topic is important enough for you to post about it, you could also start your own thread. Courtesy and consideration go a long ways on a forum where we all interact with each other at one time or another.

The fact that so many tributes are being planned speaks volumes of his impact on the world of music. And that's not to discount the contributions of the other Minnesota bred musicians. I'm sure when Dylan passes, he'll have tributes planned as well. Maybe they'll choose Madonna again! Good choice? No? See our point?! I respect all musicians who have been in the game for decades and are considered icons whether I like them or not! You have to respect them! Having said that, I can appreciate Madonna's tribute. If she didn't like or respect Prince, she wouldn't have accepted the invite to perform. Stevie was probably thrown in there to legitimize the tribute. Whatever. It's done. It's in the history books. I'm looking forward to all the other 'properly' planned tributes. In fact, bands all over my area have performed or are planning tributes including my band. It's all good. Can we now just stop all this side bar chatter and stay on topic?

It's not opinion, it's empirical fact! I know we live in a fact free society these days, but come on.
