I'd say you just have a significantly lower bar for the definition of "star" than I do.

I use the "a highly celebrated person in some art, profession, or field", and just because one used to be a star means nothing in the here and now.

If the majority of random people on the street can't name you from a picture or one of your songs - you are not currently a pop star.

First of all I love Madonna... Her, Prince, Michael Jackson, Sade, David Sylvian and myself, all were born in the same year,
I think that was a very good year...

That being said I think the industry's response to THE PEOPLE, and THE FANS wanting to see maybe some musicians and artists who either worked directly with Prince and or who he may have inspired would have been appropriate....

This hard line attitude is what's wrong with the music business and it's why the industry crumbled and people don't want to pay for music anymore, they use the same 3 or 4 artists and the Disney artist crew for everything that's pathetic. They got it fixed so artists don't make any money. Everybody gets paid but the artist. How to ruin a great business 101....silly.

People, you need to stand up, If you want to support artists then get their music directly from them otherwise you're just lining the pockets of those business people making those bad business decision as opposed to creative artistic ones... Music is suffering.

Fans and artists CAN exist outside of their bubble, that's a fact and in the end it most certainly will be their loss...but It is sad and correct me if I'm wrong, and all due respect to Madonna but I think Prince refused to perform or do interviews unless the line up of artists or journalists were gender balanced and color balanced... Next time Reach out... There are some serious musicians and artists out here making powerful music, trust me.... It would have made his tribute the talk of the industry, in a good way....

If they or whoever actually stopped and maybe got a little creative and instead of doing business as usual, thought about who Prince really was and what he stood for, they may have come up with some really cool options including Madonna.

I knew who he was and I think I might know a little about what HE may have wanted to see in a tribute.... Just sayin... I know they think they're all powerful and omnipotent and think they have all the answers because it's their game and they have money but the art of music and those who are truly gifted are bigger than money and their platform. It's just unfortunate that their platform is the window to a world, I just think it would be sad to see my friends tribute and memory get misrepresented so it just comes and goes like so many of those other tributes. I think he deserves something as special as he was.

He gave his all to his fans and he raised the bar high, it's unfortunate that the industry has no clue how to raise the bar, they've done a fabulous job lowering it.
No disrespect to Madonna, I'm a big fan, I think she's a great artist and a great choice but there should have been more....

Cry me a river dude, no one puts a gun to your head and makes you sign that contract, its business and should be looked at carefully by trusted legal advisors before anything is sign. I'm guessing by the disarray his estate is in right now he wasn't as sharp as one might expect, and for the record Prince died of an overdose of a prescription drug, Jimi Hendrix death was accidental as well. There are many fine musicians in the Twin Cities area, Prince was only one of many.

The jealousy runs deep. Saying that Prince was one of many is like comparing da Vinci to a guy painting caricatures on the corner. Prince screwed with the will, no doubt, but he died in control of his recordings, and was still touring profitably. He was also maintaining Paisley Park and its staff.

While I am getting over myself, you can get a grip. A person who is not jealous or hating, will admit the simple fact that Prince was one of the biggest and most influential artists of the late twentieth century. The man was incredibly gifted and a huge influence on how music sounded for a twenty year period. Heck, I barely listened to Motörhead, but it was obvious that Lemmy made a huge impact. Dio was a great singer, even if I never bought his music. Merle Haggard clearly spoke for millions of working class white people. I truly feel sorry for someone who can only appreciate music that you personally like.

11artists, but too many to mention!

My history goes back to 1979-80 when Prince's music was less Rock\Pop oriented! No doubt Prince was hands down the number one artist in the world during the Purple Rain days!

With all due respect towards Prince, he was a pop star. Not a national hero, or somebody who was a complete game changer in the larger scheme of things. From what I saw, he was a talented but temperamental recluse who could write a good song, and put on a spectacular stage show. So I prefer to keep it all in perspective. His death, while tragic - especially in light of how it probably was avoidable - is still what it is: the passing of a popular entertainer. So while I can sympathize and feel a certain sadness, as I would over any productive life cut short, I can't say I am devastated by it. Nor do I feel any desire to form a church around it like some of his fans apparently want to.

But that's me. I'm sure there are many who will disagree.

Who is expecting you to be devastated by Prince's passing? I was a fan and played his music in a band, but a month out, I'm not down anymore. I was not busted over many celebrity deaths. All of us have our favorites, and are moved more by some artists than others.

Bernard Edwards, my avatar, broke my heart when he died. Learning how Jaco died was a total bummer. As you know, those artists were barely known by the general population.
